Starfires defeat Heritage in shootout
South Adams roundup
MONROEVILLE - South Adams High School's softball team erased a 4-1 deficit with an eight-run third inning and rolled to a 15-9 win over the host Heritage Patriots.
Brittany Pugsley went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs to lead the offense, and Katrina Hawkins had two hits and two runs. Tori Smith scored four times, and Brianna Nevil and Lindsay Chandler each added two runs.
Hawkins picked up her first victory of the year, allowing nine runs - seven earned - on nine hits and two walks in seven innings. The game included 20 errors, 13 by the Patriots.
South Adams evened its record at 3-3 with the victory.
Bellmont blanks baseball
DECATUR - The Starfires had three doubles but could not score a run Tuesday in a 9-0 loss to the host Bellmont Braves.
Bellmont grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning and put the game away with eight runs in the fourth. Andrew Smith took the loss, allowing eight runs - seven earned - on eight hits and a walk in three innings.
Caleb Sprunger finished with two doubles, and Curtis Mitchel added one.
Golfers third of four
DECATUR - South Adams posted a 199 to finish third out of four teams Tuesday at Cross Creek Golf Club.
Woodlan won the match with a 166 to finish ahead of Heritage (175), the Starfires and Adams Central (203).
Alex Habegger carded the low score for SAHS with a 44, and Stuart Poulson was one stroke back with a 45. Mark Smith added a 52, and Mark Muselman and Daniel Heckard each finished at 58.
Bearcats defeat tennis
MUNCIE - Tori Kistler picked up the only point for the Starfires Tuesday in a 4-1 loss to the Muncie Central Bearcats.
Kistler rolled to victory at No. 1 singles by a 6-2, 6-3 score. Amber Neuenschwander and Sarah Muselman went to tiebreakers in each of the first two sets, but dropped the third set in a 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 defeat.
At No. 2 singles Kellie Howell lost 6-1, 6-0, and at No. 3 singles Alex Fox suffered a 6-2, 6-3 defeat. Lindsey Graber and Kassy Potts fell 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
