Starfires drop season opener

BERNE — The regular-season winning streak for the Starfires came to an end in the season opener.
South Adams High School’s baseball team, which closed the 2012 regular season with nine straight wins, allowed three seventh-inning runs Monday as it fell 6-5 to the visiting Norwell Knights.
The Starfires (0-1) led 2-0 early, fell behind 3-2, pulled even with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning and grabbed the lead with two in the sixth. But Norwell, which out-hit SAHS 10-5, came up big in the final frame to take the victory.
Collin Affolder suffered the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in the seventh. Reece Dafforn led the Norwell offense by going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Eric Pimentel was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for South Adams. Corey Seffernick hit a two-run home run.

FR softball falls
ARCANUM, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s softball team finished with more hits than the host Franklin Monroe Jets, but it committed eight errors Monday in a 13-7 loss.
The Indians (0-1) especially struggled in the second and third innings as Franklin Monroe put up five runs in each. Only three of the Jets’ 13 runs were earned.
Haley Knapke went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run to power the Tribe offense. Jackie Fullenkamp had two triples, one RBI and one run, and Chelsea Timmerman finished 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.
Ashley Homan took the loss as she gave up eight hits and four walks in six innings. She struck out three batters.

Tribe JV dominates
CELINA, Ohio — The Fort Recovery junior varsity baseball team got strong pitching and blew open the game in the fifth inning as it cruised to a 10-0 victory Monday over the Celina Bulldogs.
Nick Litmer went five innings on the mound to earn the win for the Indians (1-0), limiting Celina to just three hits while striking out three batters.
Ross Homan struck out two batters in two scoreless innings of relief.
Kyle Schroer went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI to lead the Tribe offense, which put six runs on the board in the fifth inning. Grant Hull also had two hits, Homan notched a single, two RBIs and a run, and Evan Schoen and Nick Link each finished with a single and two runs.[[In-content Ad]]
