Starfires edge Heritage in shootout

MONROEVILLE — The extra time was well worth it for the Starfires.
South Adams High School’s girls soccer team picked up its first Allen County Athletic Conference victory of the season Monday, outscoring the host Heritage Patriots 3-2 in a penalty-kick shootout for a 2-1 victory.
Both teams scored in the opening half and then played scoreless through the second half and 14 minutes of overtime to set up the shootout. The Starfires connected on three of their five penalty kicks with goals from Riley Liechty, Sharon Balsiger and Rachel Simon to earn the win.
Goalie Alaina Johnston was key in the victory as she saved 22 of the 23 Heritage shots on goal.
Simon scored the lone goal for SAHS (3-7) in regulation on an assist from Samantha Sprunger. Simon took four shots on goal in the game, and Sprunger finished with two.

Squaws top golfers
GENEVA — The South Adams girls golf team suffered a 186-209 loss Monday to the visiting Bellmont Squaws at Golf Club of the Limberlost.
Abbie Fisher was the only player to break 50 for the Starfires (8-6) as she recorded pars on the 335-yard, par-4 fourth hole and the 90-yard, par-3 ninth. She also had two bogeys on the way to a 49.
Bellmont’s Rachel Klingensmith earned medalist honors with a 42.
Sam Schwartz followed Fisher for SAHS as she also parred the ninth hole and had four bogeys as she finished with a 50. Kelli Lehman totaled three bogeys and posted a 54, and Jaci Gorrell added a 56.
Maddie Graber finished with a 60.


Volleyball falls in 3
BERNE — The host Starfires struggled to slow down the Blackhawk Christian Braves Monday as they fell 25-18, 25-9, 25-21.
Cady Farlow paced South Adams as she finished with five assists, four blocks and four kills. Alyssa Bluhm added seven kills and two blocks, and Lauren Smith put up five assists.
Hannah Mitchel finished with seven digs.
SAHS dropped the junior varsity match in two games.

Boys soccer blanked
BERNE — South Adams couldn’t keep the momentum from its Saturday victory as it lost 7-0 Monday to the visiting Heritage Patriots.
Heritage dominated play throughout the game, with Aaron Horne and Carson White each scoring twice in the opening half. Horne added another goal for the Patriots in the second half to complete his hat trick.
Logan White and Hil Sun also scored for Heritage, and Swa Bay finished with a pair of assists.
South Adams (2-6-1), which defeated Jay County 3-1 Saturday, was limited to just three shots on goal, all of which were saved by Heritage goalies Taylen Melcher and Seth Derickson.[[In-content Ad]]
