BERNE - The Starfires and Patriots stood head and shoulders above the field. But only one could stand tallest.

Senior captain Jackson Werst came up with the clinching victory Saturday as his South Adams High School wrestling team held on for a 39-33 victory over Jay County in the deciding match of the South Adams Invitational.

The Starfires held a 36-18 lead before JCHS ran off three straight victories, including consecutive first-period pins from Sha White (171) and Andrew Lancaster (189). Those victories pulled the Patriots to within three points, leaving the 215-pound tilt to decide the team result.

Jay County's Matt James, a transfer from Delta, and Werst of SAHS wrestled to a scoreless tie in the first period before James scored a second-period escape for a 1-0 lead. Werst returned the favor in the third period to even the score, and overtime seemed eminent.

However, Werst scored a takedown with about 20 seconds left in the match and held on for the 3-1 win to lift his Starfires.

South Adams won every other match by at least 36 points, dominating Eastbrook 56-20, Delta 66-13, Union City 70-9 and Harding 72-10 to run its perfect record to 11-0. Jay County's four wins on the day all came by double digits - 66-14 over Harding, 58-15 over Union City, 44-27 over Eastbrook and 60-10 over Delta.

Chase Sprunger (152) highlighted the day for the Starfires, who had never beaten JCHS in a dual, as he picked up his 100th career victory. He was one of six SAHS wrestlers to turn in a perfect day, and his 104 career wins rank him sixth in school history.

Todd Batt (103), John Striker (125), Josh Ehr (135), Werst (215) and Jim West (HWT) all finished 5-0 as well.

Seniors Casey Kenney (119) and Caleb Culy (130) led Jay County, which is now 9-4, with perfect 5-0 marks on the day. Dylan Derrickson (140) finished 3-0.

Other winning records on the day came from Ben Theurer (145), Skylar Finnerty (152), White, James and Kyler Blowers (HWT), who all went 4-1. Matt Seagraves (103), Cameron Pfeifer (135) and Michael Daniels (160) each posted 3-2 records.[[In-content Ad]]
