Starfires fade in final quarter (12/10/03)

South Adams was in the mix for an upset, but couldn’t sustain the effort for four quarters in a 51-40 loss to Class 2A’s eighth-ranked Winchester Golden Falcons Tuesday.

The Starfires girls basketball team (1-5) trailed by just four points at halftime. They put up a big 21 points in the third quarter to grab a 36-34 lead, but got outscored 17-4 in the final period for the final margin.

Winchester improved to 8-0 with the victory.

Kindle Inniger paced South Adams with 13 points, three assists, two steals and a block. Erin McCollum was next with seven points, and Julie Muhlenkamp had six.

Muhlenkamp also grabbed 14 rebounds, and Kelly Mertz finished with six boards.

South Adams also took the defeat in junior varsity action, dropping a 47-27 decision.

The Starfires will host Leo Friday at 6 p.m.

High rolling

It’s been a good start to the year for the Jay County Blue Jay High Rollers bowling team.

The High Rollers extended their season-opening winning streak to three matches with a 17-3 stomping of Heritage Tuesday. Jay County dominated the first game, taking all 10 points on the way to the victory.

Jesse Shawver had the high game for the High Rollers with a 224. Chris Elmore rolled the top series with a 414.

Jay County also grabbed a 20-0 win in junior varsity action.

The High Rollers’ next match is Saturday, Dec. 20 against Blackford at the Brown Bowl.

Chiefs top Bluffton

The eighth graders needed a couple of extra minutes, but both of East Jay’s boys basketball teams defeated Union City Westside Tuesday.

The seventh graders dominated their way to a 50-29 victory. The eighth grade Chiefs won a 53-47 overtime decision.

The win for the eighth grade team evened its record at 1-1 on the year.

Michael Jobe paced the squad with 18 points. Clint Muhlenkamp scored 12 points, and Joshua Ludy added 10.

Billy Wellman led the effort for the seventh grade team (2-0) with 18 points. Cole Ingram and Lance Franklin each chipped in eight points.

WJ splits vs. Wes-Del

The West Jay seventh grade boys basketball team topped Wes-Del 53-21 Tuesday with an excellent second half, but the eighth grade team had a rough third quarter on the way to a 47-40 defeat.

The Eagle seventh graders (4-4) trailed by two points at halftime, but played stifling defense and sizzling offense after the break. They outscored Wes-Del 42-8 in the final two quarters.

Blake Price led the effort with 21 points, and Brady Mills had 10. Ty Fullenkamp scored eight points, and Bobby Spencer added six.

The eighth grade team (4-4) blasted Wes-Del 20-6 in the second quarter for a 14-point halftime lead, but the Warriors returned the favor later. Wes-Del put 23 points on the board in the third period compared to just two by the Eagles.

Brandon Buckland had 16 points for West Jay, and Kyle Cook scored 11.

Soggy Bottom takes 1st

The Soggy Bottom Boyz claimed sole possession of first place in the Jay Community Center 3-on-3 men’s basketball league with a 74-59 win over previously undefeated Muddy Waters Sunday.

Jim Ainsworth led a balanced scoring attack for the Soggy Bottom Boyz (4-0) with 25 points. Chris Snow contributed 18 points, Dean Seagraves had 15 and Jerome Collins added 10.

Mitch Waters scored a game-high 38 points for Muddy Waters (3-1), but it wasn’t enough.

In other games Sunday Jesse Walter Construction topped Teal Automotive 75-69, Lucky defeated Jay Community Center 99-86 and FCC Indiana topped Berne Furniture 93-77.

Tony Overton was again the top scorer of the week with 51 points in the win for Lucky (3-1).[[In-content Ad]]
