Starfires fall in overtime (08/29/05)

Football roundup

DECATUR — The Starfires needed just one more yard to keep playing.

The South Adams football team got pushed into overtime Friday, and just missed forcing a second OT. However, Corey LeMaster’s scramble on a fourth-and-goal play from the 5-yard line fell just short as the Starfires fell to the host Bellmont Braves 26-19.

In overtime, each team gets a chance to score starting a the 10-yard line.

After Bellmont (2-0) scored a touchdown and extra point to open the first OT, South Adams started its possession with runs of one and four yards from Brent Habegger and Lukas Baumgartner respectively. LeMaster’s pass on third down was incomplete, and his scramble for the end zone on fourth down left him at the 1-yard line.

Bellmont got its score in overtime on a 4-yard run by Zach Brune.

South Adams (0-2) was hurt by turnovers as it saw its losing streak stretch to nine games.

LeMaster was picked off to end three consecutive drives in the second half, including twice in Bellmont territory. Quarterback Kraig Miller gave the ball back once on an interception, but the Braves converted the other two turnovers into touchdowns. Miller hit Justin Hall for a 36-yard touchdown for the first, which cut the Starfires’ 19-6 halftime lead to just seven points, and Mickie Smith busted a 53-yard touchdown run for the second.

Hall’s extra-point kick following Smith’s touchdown tied the game with 7:25 to play, eventually forcing the overtime in which Brune’s touchdown won it for Bellmont.

Smith, Brune and Coty Shirk led the ground game with 89, 78 and 54 yards respectively. The Braves picked up 246 yards on the ground.

Miller, who scored Bellmont’s other touchdown on a 1-yard run three minutes into the game, completed 6-of-17 passes for 72 yards.

Andrew Flueckiger scored twice for South Adams as he racked up 127 yards on 19 carries. Habegger added 92 yards on 15 carries, and the Starfires finished with 256 yards on the ground.

LeMaster went 12-of-20 passing for 108 yards and a second-quarter touchdown to Will Grandlinard.

Sudhoff lifts Tribe

FORT RECOVERY — One big break was all they needed.

The Fort Recovery junior varsity football team got just one score — on special teams — but it was enough for a 6-0 victory over the Ansonia Tigers Saturday.

Craig Sudhoff posted the only points in the game, returning a punt 60 yards for a touchdown for the Indians in the third quarter.[[In-content Ad]]
