Starfires fall to Knights

OSSIAN — The South Adams High School boys basketball team struggled to find any offense in the first half Tuesday in a 64-43 loss to the host Norwell Knights.
The Starfires (4-11) managed just four second-quarter points and shot just 4-of-21 (19 percent) in the opening half. They trailed 35-11 at the break, and fell behind by as many as 28 in the second half.
Dustin Wanner was the only Starfire in double figures as he finished with 14 points. Ben Meshberger added nine points, and Trevor White grabbed 10 rebounds.
Grant Baker scored 14 points to pace Norwell (13-4), which forced 29 turnovers. Jeff Shatto added 11 points.
In junior varsity action, Logan Steiner and Mark Muselman each had six points as South Adams fell 54-30.
Keen breaks two
MONROE — James Keen broke two records Tuesday as the Jay County middle school swim teams defeated host Adams Central. The boys team won 96-56 while the girls picked up a 119-66 victory.
Keen slaughtered the team record in the 400-yard freestyle, winning the event in 4 minutes, 30.45 seconds. He broke the previous mark set by Caleb Dann in 1998 by nearly 28 seconds.
His other record came by a narrow margin as he finished the 50 freestyle in 25.06 seconds. He was 0.03 seconds faster than the record set by Derek Arnold in 1999.
Sok Vormohr added a pair of individual victories for the boys team.
Emma Laux, Sydney Mathias, Anne Vormohr, Katy Smeltzer, Sophie Bader and Ashley Mark all earned individual wins for the girls.
Both the boys and girls teams swept all three relays.
Eagles, Starfires win
The West Jay Middle School wrestling team defeated host Wes-Del 48-36, and the South Adams grapplers topped visiting Huntington Riverview 30-21. The East Jay wrestling team fell 48-45 at home to Delta.
Chad Homan paced the WJMS squad with his pin in just 31 seconds in the 160-pound weight class. Other pins came from Dallas Dudelston (110), Bryce Bantz (135), Logan Bantz (140) and Triston VanSkyock (145).
South Adams got victories from Ryan Ford, Kadin Gerber, Mason Morningstar, David All, Gage Conner, Boaz Marbach, Chance Sprunger, Matt Nussbaum and Skylar Shrout.
Colton Compton (80), Mitchell Bruggeman (85), Matt Blackford (110), Luke Rowles (115), Levi Hummel (135), Hunter Gillette (160) and Michael Williamson (175) all picked up pins for East Jay. Alex Abbott (100) won by a 10-5 decision.
Delta tops EJMS
East Jay’s sixth grade girls basketball team stayed perfect Tuesday as it fought off the visiting Delta Eagles for a 12-10 victory.
Taylor Homan and Audrey Shreve each finished with four points for EJMS (10-0), which led 8-7 going into the final period. Emily Muhlenkamp and Britlyn Dues totaled two points apiece.
In the B team game, Erika Kunkler scored six points as the Chiefs fell 15-13.[[In-content Ad]]
