Starfires fall to Manchester (02/01/08)

BERNE - A slow start and a slow finish doomed the Starfires.

South Adams High School's girls basketball team led at the close of the first quarter, but only after falling behind 7-0. It led again in the fourth, and then gave up 13 unanswered points in a 44-32 loss to the Manchester Squires.

Ashton Morgan powered the Starfires after their slow start, hitting a pair of 3-pointers as she scored eight points in the opening period. She added all of SAHS's six points in the second, totaling all of her game-high 14 points before the intermission. She also had five steals.

South Adams continued to struggle offensively, shooting just 11-of-27 (30 percent) and scoring six, six and five points in the final three quarters.

Andrea Moser added eight points, 11 rebounds and three assists, and Jordan Lehman had eight points and eight boards.

Katie Bowers paced Manchester with 13 points. Noelle Patrick chipped in eight.

Tori Kistler had eight points to lead the SAHS junior varsity team to a 26-24 win.

EJMS pins Starfires

Cody Bellis barely needed to show up Thursday as he led the East Jay Middle School wrestling team to a 72-31 victory over the South Adams Starfires.

Bellis needed just 10 seconds to win his 145-pound match against SAMS. Eric Beougher (130) won in 37 seconds, and Brandon Poore (100) ended his match in 43.

Robert Cooper (75), Conner Ray (80), Nick Leonhard (120), Nick Nuckols (135) and Lucas Boyer (225) also had pins in the victory. Kyle Garringer (152) picked up a 5-2 decision, and Heng Hong (125) won 10-4.

Steven Strohl (105), Wil Skiver (125), Pierce Clott (135), Ethan Bruggeman (145) and Kane Bray (175) earned junior varsity wins for East Jay.

Eagles defeat HC

West Jay Middle School's wrestling team racked up eight pins Thursday in a 52-24 victory over Hartford City.

Dustin Tighe turned in the fastest pin for the Eagles, finishing off the 95-pound match in 20 seconds. Cory Green (100) won in 40 seconds, Nathan Drumm (125) finished in 48 and Sam Pitman (115) was finished in 50.

Other pins came from Raistlin Rice (85), Jesse Finnerty (90), Carrolton Fischer (110) and Travis Callahan (145).

Chase Louck (105) earned an 8-1 decision.

Sean Winget (95) won his junior varsity match by pin in 40 seconds.

Sixth grade edges Delta

The East Jay Middle School sixth grade girls basketball team eked out a victory Thursday, topping the Delta Eagles 25-23.

Katlin Petro powered the Chiefs (9-1) with 12 points and eight rebounds. Abigail Johnson and Abby Dunlavy each scored four points, and Mikayla Gross had two assists.

Valerie McGill scored four points to lead the B team (6-1) to an 8-6 victory. Sara Bollenbacher grabbed seven rebounds and Cheyenne Dull had six boards.

West Jay boys lose

DUNKIRK - West Jay Middle School's sixth grade boys basketball team lost 33-29 Thursday to Hartford City.

Kyle Selvey scored 13 points for the Eagles in the defeat. Jon Lowe and Toby McCallister each had five points.

Sam Selvey scored five points to lead the B team to a 9-6 victory.

FR falls in MAC

Fort Recovery Middle School's eighth grade boys basketball team lost in the opening round of the Midwest Athletic Conference tournament Wednesday with a 56-45 loss to the Coldwater Cavaliers.

The Indians led by four after the opening period, but got outscored 26-13 over the next two periods. They finished the season 1-14.

Jared Kahlig scored 20 points for Fort Recovery in the defeat. Jason Pottkotter and Jacob Whitacre each added 10.

Stahly honored

Dean Stahly, who has coached the South Adams High School baseball team for 38 years, was inducted to the Indiana Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Stahly has 513 career coaching victories and seven Allen County Athletic Conference championships. His teams have won seven sectional titles and four regional titles, and have made two state finals appearances.[[In-content Ad]]
