Starfires fall to Winchester

BERNE — A first February win was within reach for the Starfires. They came up just short.
The South Adams High School boys basketball team used a 19-point third quarter to grab a one-point lead, but ended up taking a 51-50 loss to the visiting Winchester Golden Falcons.
The defeat was the fifth in a row for the Starfires (5-14), whose last win came 59-57 over Southern Wells on Jan. 27. They have dropped six straight against Winchester (12-8).
Dustin Wanner led a group of three Starfires in double figures with 19 points. He finished 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Scott Hoeppner and Matt Alig added 12 points apiece.
Blake Fox grabbed seven rebounds, and Hoeppner dished out seven assists.
Cody Woodbury totaled 20 points, nine rebounds and four steals in Winchester’s fourth straight win. Connor Detweiler followed with 17 points.

EJ grapplers roll
East Jay Middle School’s wrestling team racked up victory after victory Tuesday as it clobbered Union City West Side 87-9.
Twelve of the Chiefs’ 13 victories came by pins, including five in a row from Colten Compton (92), Ivan Hemmelgarn (97), Brent Englehardt (102), A.J. Bryan (107) and Mitchell Bruggeman (112). Also turning in pins were Kaimen Sanders (82), Alex Stout (127), Matt Blackford (137), Levi Hummel (147), Nick Lairson (154), Andy Kohler (162), John Osterholt (177) and Michael Williamson (HWT).
Graham Hianes (122) added a 12-10 victory in overtime.

Eagles top Daleville
DUNKIRK — The West Jay wrestling team picked up three pins Tuesday in doubling up the visiting Daleville Broncos 60-30.
Triston Miller (80) had the quick pin of the evening, finishing off his match in 22 seconds. Other pins came from Jacob Geesaman (85) in 1:27 and Tyler Hibbard (115) in 2:30.
Keegan Kane (125) earned a victory by a 6-3 decision, and Jacob Barker (135) added a win by a 9-7 decision.

Simmons wins
ANGOLA — Katie Simmons dominated the field as she competed for the Patriot Track Club at Saturday’s Trine University High School Invitational.
Simmons, a Jay County High School senior who won sectional titles in the 1,600-meter run and 3,200 run last season, cruised to victory over the other 16 competitors in the 1,600 run at Trine. She crossed the finish line in 5 minutes, 34.42 seconds to beat runner-up Molly Maciejewski by more than 12 seconds.
Brad Leuthold, also a JCHS senior, finished first in his heat of the 400 dash at the indoor meet in 56.48. He was ninth overall while Shauntis Lewis won the event in 51.39.[[In-content Ad]]
