Starfires fight off Randolph Southern

LYNN - Another day brought another wild shootout for the Starfires. And they ended up on top again.

South Adams High School's softball team scored seven times in the top of the seventh inning Wednesday and then held off the host Randolph Southern Rebels for a 13-12 victory.

Brianna Nevil led the offense for South Adams, which beat Heritage 15-9 Tuesday, with a single, a double, a run and an RBI. Tori Smith was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs.

Katrina Hawkins, Karen Bollenbacher and Birttany Pugsley each added two runs.

Lily Taing picked up the win as only two of the six runs against her were earned. She allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out two batters in five innings.

MS girls track wins

PONETO - Alaina Johnston racked up three wins Wednesday to lead the middle school girls track team to a 65.5-43.5 victory over the Southern Wells Raiders. The boys team lost 68-40.

Johnston turned in a pair of sprint wins, taking the 200-meter dash in 30.4 seconds and the 400 dash with a time of 1 minute, 11 seconds. She also took the long jump at 12 feet, 5 ¼ inches.

Michaela Rupp added two wins, finishing first in the 100 hurdles in 18.5 ahead of teammates Brandi Toland and Olivia Turner and winning the 200 hurdles in 34.5. Hannah Taing won the shot put at 26 feet, 11 inches, and Turner was first as she cleared the bar at 4 feet, 3 inches in the high jump.

Brody Shane handled the long-distance events for the boys team, taking the 800 run in 2:26 and the 1,600 run with a time of 5:16. Matt Nussbaum added a victory with a leap of 14 feet, 3 ¼ inches in the long jump.[[In-content Ad]]
