Starfires finish second

DECATUR — Mark Smith came through for the Starfires from the No. 3 spot, but they had to settle for a split.
The South Adams High School boys golf team posted a score of 195 to finish second in an all-Adams County competition Thursday at Cross Creek Golf Club. The Bellmont Braves won the event with a 165, and the Adams Central Flying Jets finished at 244.
Smith set the pace for the Starfires as he posted a 4-over-par 40.
Chase Ellsworth of Bellmont earned medalist honors with a 37. Blake Pfeiffer had the top score for Adams Central at 49.
Chase Mosser was the only other SAHS player to break 50 as he finished with a 48. Mark Muselman added a 51, and Derek Fox shot 56.

Lions top baseball
LEO — A close game turned into a blowout as the Leo Lions scored eight times in the fifth inning Tuesday to top South Adams 12-2 in five innings.
Leo, which led just 4-2 heading into the fifth, tagged Alex Augsburger for eight runs — six earned — on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Nick Batt gave up three runs without recording an out, and Kyle Raugh tossed the final third of an inning before the Lions ended the game early.
Raugh hit a solo home run for the Starfires, and Blake Fox went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI. Corey Seffernick added a doubles and a run.

Softball shut out
LEO — The Starfires managed just two hits as they fell 6-0 to the Leo Lions.
Leo (15-1) scored the only run it would need in the second inning. It added one run in the fourth and four in the fifth for the final margin.
Alyssa Bluhm gave up six runs — five earned — on 10 hits and four walks to take the loss. She struck out three batters.
The lone hits for the Starfires were singles from Lyndsey Chandler and Brianna Nevil.
