Starfires fourth in final poll

Local roundup

INDIANAPOLIS — The Starfires’ eighth win lifted them to their highest ranking of the season.
South Adams was voted fourth by The Associated Press in its final Class A high school poll of the year.
The Starfires (8-1), who were tied with Rockville for sixth a week earlier, earned 152 poll points to finish 26 ahead of No. 5 Milan. They are in the midst of their first winning season since 2001, and their eight wins are the most since going 8-1 in 1993.
The lone loss of the season for South Adams came against Class 4A No. 4 Leo (9-0). The only teams ahead of the Starfires in the Class 1A poll are undefeated two-time defending state champion Lafayette Central Catholic, Pioneer and Linton. None of those schools played a Class 4A opponent this year.
The Starfires will open sectional play at home against Monroe Central (3-6) on Friday at 7 p.m.
