Starfires' Goodwin earns regional berth (06/05/07)

Local roundup

FARMLAND - The season came to an end Monday for most of the Starfires. But not Phil Goodwin.

South Adams' No. 1 player shot 80 at the sectional golf tournament hosted by Monroe Central at Hickory Hills Golf Club to earn himself a spot in the Muncie Central regional. The Starfires were eight in the 13-team field overall with a score of 362.

Yorktown won the tournament at 305, and Delta (316) and Monroe Central (321) followed in second and third to also earn regional berths.

Goodwin earned his regional spot because he was one of the three top scorers not on a qualifying team. He will join the qualifiers from the Huntington North, Noblesville and Richmond sectionals in competition at The Players Club Friday beginning at 8 a.m.

Following Goodwin's 80 for the Starfires was Jay Schwartz with an 88. Landyn Waugh scored a 96, Ryan Moser shot 98, and Thurman Pursley finished at 100.

Cardinals win pair

The Geneva Cardinals pushed their record to 3-1 last week with wins of 8-4 on the road over Van Wert in eight innings and 14-4 at home against the Indianapolis Rockhounds.

Chris Anderson keyed the win over Van Wert, hitting his first career home run and the Cardinals' first of the season. Chris Nealeigh and Ryane Munro each went 2-for-4, and Chris Opel had two RBIs.

Matt Hille smashed a fourth-inning grand slam in the win over Indianapolis as he finished 2-for-4. Opel went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Kraig Miller finished 2-for-2.

Winning pitchers for Geneva were Mark Miller and Jaime Feldheiser.

Rockets start at 0-4

The Portland Rockets got off to a slow start this weekend, dropping a pair of double-headers on the road. They fell 13-3 and 6-5 Saturday to the Northwest Patriots and lost 7-5 and 4-1 Saturday against the Michigan City All-Stars.

Ryan Schmidt had two of Portland's three hits in its opening loss, and added two more hits in the first game against Michigan City. Heath Williams finished 2-for-4 in the second game against Northwest.

Williams, Lenny Koesters and Dustin McHenry picked up the only hits for the Rockets in the final game of the weekend.

Byrge gets 1st win

NEW CASTLE - Four races into the season United Midget Racing Association defending champion Kenny Byrge picked up his first win.

Byrge, Dunkirk, sits third in the point standings after picking up his first victory of 2007 on the pavement at Mt. Lawn Speedway.

He started the race on the outside of the second row before he and points leader Terry Goff chased down pole-sitter Tate Martz. Byrge finally passed Martz on the final lap on the way to his first victory.

Byrge is currently third in the points with 513, trailing only Terry Goff (561) and Oogie Goff (538).[[In-content Ad]]
