Starfires pick up first win (08/30/07)

BERNE - The Starfires are winless no more.
South Adams High School's boys tennis team got just what it needed Wednesday, a day at home and a victory. After four straight matches on the road, the Starfires returned to Berne with a 4-1 victory over the Union City Indians.
Chase Ingle and Landyn Waugh dominated at No. 2 and 3 singles, with Ingle topping Ian Armstrong 6-1, 6-0 and Waugh defeating Jordan Loesch 6-2, 6-1. Jacob Smith and Daniel Dynes were also in control throughout at No. 2 doubles as they smashed Danny Lamm and Levi Thornburg 6-1, 6-2.
Kegan Sprunger and Kyle Schmidt turned in the other Starfire win by a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 final over Zach Holt and Adam Bragg at No. 1 doubles.
Brett Wagner fell 6-4, 6-2 to Cody Wicker at No. 1 singles.
Reid Zurcher won the lone junior varsity match 9-8 (9-7) over Brandon Thornburg.
Golfers edge Raiders
GENEVA - Amber Melick gave her team a cushion and they were able to hang on.
Melick topped her No. 1 counterpart by seven strokes, leading the Starfire girls golf team to a 212-214 victory Wednesday over the Wayne Trace Raiders.
Melick shot a 5-over-par 41 at Wabash Valley Golf Club for a seventh stroke advantage. Tricia Crider and Kara Lehman followed with matching 56s, and Alyssa Neuenschwander finished off the victory with a 59.
Sarah Muselman finished at 67.
Boys soccer gets 1st
GARRETT - When the Starfires got their first win, they did it in grand fashion.
The South Adams boys soccer team clobbered Garrett 10-0 Tuesday to get their first win.
Senior Captain Adam McLauglin led the offensive onslaught for the Starfires (1-2-2), who scored five times in each half. He had four of those goals while adding two assists.
Shane Swygart, the team's other captain, and Travis Lavy each finished with two goals and one assist.
Zack Sharp and Blake Bauman, both freshmen, added one goal apiece, and Taylor Sprunger and Tyler Trowbridge each had one assist.[[In-content Ad]]
