NEW CASTLE — South Adams’ wrestling team had another perfect day, going 5-0 at the New Castle Invitational Saturday.
The Starfires’ closest match came against the host Trojans, but was still a victory by a 37-31 count. They also defeated Alexandria 54-21, Yorktown 51-26, Eastern Hancock 57-18 and Ben Davis 58-29 to run their record to 15-1 on the season.
Chase Sprunger (103), Josh Mann (112) and Christian Baer (135) all finished the day with 5-0 records. Mann is currently ranked 14th in the state.
Four other South Adams wrestlers finished with one loss. They were: Colt Gentis (119), Dustin Ehr (152), Adam Hirschy (160) at 4-1 and Josh Kimberlin (189) at 3-1.
Jay last at Norwell
OSSIAN — Jay County’s boys swim team had just one top-10 finish as it placed last out of nine teams at the Norwell Invitational Saturday.
The Patriots scored 12 points, 30 behind eighth-place Columbia City. Oak Hill won with 266 points, and the host Knights were third with 242. South Adams placed fifth with 111.
Tom McCord posted the best result for Jay County, finishing fifth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1-minute, 6.56 seconds. The next best Patriot effort was 12th place in the 200 medley relay.
South Adams was led by sophomore Matt Kruse. He finished second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:23.81, and was third in the 200 freestyle in 1:52.30.
Justin Klopp was fourth in both the 50 and 100 freestyle, finishing in 24.13 and 53.56 respectively.
High Rollers lose pair
The Baker position round format didn’t agree with the Jay County High Roller bowling teams Saturday as they both fell to defeat.
The boys squad had its undefeated record snapped by Huntington North by a 12-8 score. The girls team took just its second loss of the season, 14-6 to Bellmont.
In the boys match the High Rollers got off to a slow start, losing four of the first five matches. They closed the gap by winning three of the next four, but couldn’t come all the way back.
The High Roller girls won two of the first three matches, but lost a couple of close ones in the middle and could not recover.[[In-content Ad]]
