Starfires rally past Union City (05/20/04)

Local Roundup

The South Adams baseball team saw its lead disappear, but came back with a run in the top of the seventh inning for a 3-2 victory over the Union City Indians Wednesday.

The Starfires scored twice in the third inning and held the 2-0 lead until Union City tied the contest in the bottom of the sixth. But, they reclaimed the lead in the top of the final inning and Justin Caffee tossed a scoreless seventh to preserve the win.

Caffee picked up the save as he walked two and struck out one. Aaron Givens got the win in relief of Tyler Sprunger, getting the final two outs of the sixth inning.

Sprunger gave up two runs on five hits in 51/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked three.

Givens was the offensive star as he blasted a two-run home run in the second inning. Craig Neuenschwander doubled to bring in the winning run in the seventh, and Kyle White and Cole Scheiderer each scored once.

FR tied atop MAC

Fort Recovery lost to Versailles in softball a few weeks ago, but it got some much-desired help from the Tigers Wednesday.

Versailles defeated the New Bremen Cardinals, handing them their second Midwest Athletic Conference loss of the season. As a result Fort Recovery (17-7, 5-2 MAC) will finish in a tie for the MAC title — its first ever — with the Cardinals, and Tribe coach Marie Osterholt will be recognized as a Co-MAC Coach of the Year.

Parkway can still make it a three-way tie with a victory over Minster in its final MAC contest.

Bruins top Stars

South Adams had a lead, but it couldn’t hang on for a victory as it lost 7-4 to the Blackford Bruins in softball action Wednesday.

The Starfires (4-15) scored once in the second and third innings and twice in the fifth to hold a 4-1 lead. But, Blackford posted six sixth-inning runs to take the lead for good.

Renee Neuenschwander took the defeat, allowing seven runs — four earned — on nine hits. She walked seven and struck out two.

Kindle Inninger had a pair of hits and a stolen base, and scored two of South Adams’ four runs. Candice Miller also had a pair of hits and a stolen base.

LeeAnn Snyder doubled and scored, and Shante Miller also scored once.

The Starfires will play at home today against Bluffton at 4:30 p.m.
