Starfires roll to 1st victory


BERNE — The Starfires were winless in five games and had scored just twice. They flipped the script on Monday.
South Adams High School’s girls soccer team scored all of its goals in the first half and rolled to a 6-0 victory over the visiting Muncie Southside Rebels.
Senior Rachel Simon led the Starfires in their breakthrough win as she finished with a pair of goals. Samantha Sprunger assisted on both of those scores, and also tallied one of her own.
Olivia Turner, a junior, also had a pair of assists as her passes led to goals by Sharon Balsiger and Michaela Rupp, and Jordan Weaver also scored for SAHS.
Alaina Johnston finished with five saves in the first half, and Jordan Brown finished the shutout with three saves in the second.

Football is No. 10
INDIANAPOLIS — The second loss for the Starifres in their last 15 regular-season games dropped them five places in The Associated Press Class 1A football pool released Monday.
South Adams (1-1) earned 34 poll points to edge Hagerstown (32) for the final place in the top 10. It’s county and conference rival, Adams Central (2-0), is ranked ninth with 72 poll points.
Defending state champion Lafayette Central Catholic (2-0) still holds the top spot.
The Starfires played a close game against Class 3A No. 10 Bellmont for the first 24 minutes Friday, but got outscored 27-0 in the second half. They will play Bluffton (2-0) at 7 p.m. Friday.


Boys soccer wins
MUNCIE — South Adams picked up its first victory of the season, getting the winning goal from Lathan Luginbill with just five minutes remaining as it topped the Muncie Southside Rebels 2-1.
The teams traded second half goals and the game was tied at 1-1 before Luginbill stole a pass from a Southside defender. Luginbill got around a couple of Southside defenders and trickled a shot past the goalie and across the line for the winning score.
John O’Donnell had the other goal for the Starfires (1-3-1) on assists from Chance Sprunger and Dustin Dellinger. O’Donnell finished with eight shots on goal, and Dellinger and Sprunger each took three.
L.J. Moser finished with 13 saves.

MS spikers split
BERNE — The South Adams Middle School volleyball teams split their matches Monday against the visitng Bellmont Squaws, with the eighth grade Starfires posting a 25-21, 25-12 victory. The seventh graders lost 25-14, 25-12.
Morgan Alberson led the eighth grade team to its season-opening win with 12 assists, eight aces and five kills. Abby Myers had three kills, and Emma Rosswurm finished with two blocks.
Julia Grabau totaled five aces for the seventh grade squad.[[In-content Ad]]
