Starfires salvage split

BERNE — The Starfires salvaged a split after a heart-breaking loss in the opener.
The South Adams High School softball team topped the visiting Bellmont Squaws 6-2 in Saturday’s second game after giving up three runs in the final frame in a 5-3 loss in the opener.
Lily Taing pitched the Starfires (9-11) to the win, limiting Bellmont to two runs — one earned — on nine hits. She suffered the game-one loss in relief, giving up three runs on six hits in four innings.
Alyssa Bluhm went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and a stolen base, and Alaina Johnston had a hit, a run, an RBI and a stolen base.
Lyndsey Chandler had a hit and two RBIs in the opener.
Brianna Nevil finished with a hit and an RBI in a 4-1 loss Friday to Garrett.
Baseball takes 2nd
BERNE — The Starfires finished as runners-up at Saturday’s South Adams Invitational, falling 8-1 to the Blackhawk Christian Braves in the championship game.
South Adams topped Frankton 12-4 in the opening round.
Blake Fox had four hits, two RBIs and two runs in the opening win, and Nick Batt went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Dustin Wanner and Kyle Raugh added two hits and two runs apiece.
Wanner earned the win, giving up four runs — two earned — on six hits. He struck out six batters.
Batt suffered the championship loss as he allowed two runs on three hits in four innings.
Collin Affolder doubled and scored a run.
Golfers finish fifth
BLUFFTON — South Adams shot 376 Saturday to finish fourth out of six teams at the Bi-County Tournament at Timber Ridge Golf Club.
Norwell won the event with a 326, placing 12 strokes ahead of runner-up Bellmont.
Mark Smith had the top score for the Starfires, finishing 11th overall with an 89. Norwell’s Tanner Matthews earned medalist honors with a 76.
Chase Mosser followed Smith for the Starfires with a 94, and Derek Fox was one stroke back at 95. Mark Muselman rounded out the team score with a 98, and Brad Green shot 100.[[In-content Ad]]
