The Patriots showed potential in stretches. But the Starfires finished off the match like they have most times this season: with a victory.
South Adams High School’s boys tennis team improved to 12-4 on the season Thursday with a 5-0 victory over host Jay County.
Both doubles matches went three sets, and the Patriots (3-13) had leads at some point in the No. 2 and 3 singles matches as well. South Adams, however, fought back every time.
The tightest match of the night came at No. 1 doubles, where the Starfires’ Kegan Sprunger and Derek Schwartz took the opening set 6-4. Chance Fuller and Joe Imel rallied to win the second set 7-5, but Sprunger and Schwartz owned the third set for a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 victory.
In the No. 2 doubles match, South Adams (12-4) dominated the first set and the Patriots cruised through the second. But again Ian Frank and Reid Zurcher of the Starfires controlled the third set to finish off a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win.
Derek Smith led the No. 2 singles match 5-4 over Scott Hoeppner in the opening set only to drop three straight games en route to a 7-5, 6-3 defeat. Landry Inman went up 2-1 in the second set after dropping the first at No. 3 singles, but Mark Muselman finished off a straight-set victory 6-1, 6-4.

And at No. 1 singles, Alex Huber of the Starfires defeated JCHS’s Brad Leuthold 6-2, 6-0.

Junior varsity
South Adams swept the four doubles matches on the way to an 8-2 victory.
The Starfires got two wins apiece from the doubles teams of Jon Steffen and Landon Lehman, and J.D. Tarr and William Hicks. Brayden Myers and Jared Rife each added two singles victories.
The only wins for Jay County came from Shawn Homan at No. 3 singles and Preston Overholser at No. 6 singles.[[In-content Ad]]
