Starfires smash Harding (05/25/05)

Local roundup

BERNE — The South Adams baseball team was dominant Tuesday. Now they just have to give an encore performance next week.

The Starfires slaughtered Fort Wayne Harding 15-7, racking up six first inning runs and eight more in the sixth. The teams will rematch Tuesday in the semifinal round of the Class 2A Woodlan sectional.

Six different South Adams players scored two runs, including two hits and two runs from Craig Neuenschwander and two stolen bases and two runs from Justin Caffee. Mike Farris, Kyle Alberson, Phil Van Gelder and Lukas Baumgartner also each scored twice.

Peter Jansson went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs.

Farris also got the win, allowing three runs — two earned — in six innings. He gave up five hits and a walk and struck out one.

Fort athletes honored

For the second straight season the entire starting lineup for Fort Recovery softball team — and a couple more — earned All-Midwest Athletic Conference academic honors. The awards were presented during the spring sports banquet at FRHS Tuesday.

The softball team had 11 members earn the academic honor by earning a varsity letter and a grade point average of 3.3 or better. The honorees were pitcher Alyssa Tobe, catcher Brenda Rindler, first baseman Megan Wenning, second baseman Ciera Rammel, shortstops Sandra Sudhoff and Kristen Schwieterman, third baseman Krystal Rammel, left fielder Kelsie Will, center fielder Renee Evers, right fielder Sarah Garman and pinch hitter Jill Wehrkamp.

The baseball team had seven players earn the All-MAC academic award. They were Tony Diller, Greg Faller, Dusty Guggenbiller, Matt Hein, Sean Kahlig, Todd Post and Dusty Tobe.

The boys and girls track teams combined to have nine athletes win the award. From the girls team were Vicki Roessner, Stefanie Schuessler, Holly Stein, Lindsay Sudhoff and Kristi Westgerdes, and from the boys team were Mitch Fullenkamp, Jim Roessner, Stan Roessner and Bruce Schoen.

Each sport also presented its Indian Award at the banquet. Winning from the softball team was Krystal Rammel, who was also the Co-MAC Player of the Year, from the baseball team was Dusty Guggenbiller and from the track teams were brother and sister Stan and Vicki Roessner. The track teams also presented Most Valuable Athlete awards to another brother/sister duo as Shawn Stein won for the boys and Holly Stein took the award for the girls.[[In-content Ad]]
