Starfires split against Bluffton (01/09/04)

The South Adams swim teams were locked into a couple of close battles Thursday, with the girls team scoring an 89-81 win over the Bluffton Tigers. The Starfire boys lost 88-82.

Chelsea Yoder paced the South Adams girls team, taking part in four victories.

Yoder had to fight off a close Bluffton challenger in each of her individual races, winning the 50-yard freestyle just one second ahead of Kristyn Sprea in 27.48 seconds. She took first by less than a second over Jessika Meyer in the 100-yard freestyle in 1-minute, 2.24 seconds.

Freshman Haleigh Lehman added a pair of individual victories, taking care of the long-distance events. She took a pair of dominant wins, finishing the 200-yard freestyle in 2:13.40 and the 500-yard freestyle in 6:13.82.

Yoder and Lehman teamed with Talitha Maven and Robyn Habegger to take the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:54.95. Yoder also joined Habegger, Whitney Liechty and Channing Yoder to cruise to a first-place finish by nearly 10 seconds in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:11.06.

The only other individual win for the Starfires came from Habegger in the 100-yard backstroke (1:14.40).

Heath Lehman was the top boys swimmer in the defeat.

He won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.45, finishing ahead of teammate Carson Sprunger. He also took the 100-yard butterfly in 1:04.58.

Lehman and Sprunger also teamed with Carl Masters and Andy Lehman to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:547.19) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:43.39).

Sprunger added a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.47), and Drew Dull won the 500-yard freestyle (6:15.74).

Turkey meeting

A representive from the National Wild Turkey Federation will host a meeting in mid-January in hopes of starting a local NWTF chapter.

The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Jay County Public Libarary. Any members of the public who are interested in the topic of conservation or turkeys may attend. The meeting is expected to last about 90 minutes.[[In-content Ad]]
