Starfires survive late Patriot rally

South Adams roundup

BERNE — The Starfires have had trouble holding on to leads in the late innings.
They held off a rally Tuesday against the visiting Heritage Patriots.
Alaina Johnston had a pair of hits and scored two runs and Katelin Augsburger pitched the South Adams High School softball team to a 5-2 win over the Patriots.
With a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning, the Patriots scored two runs before the Starfires were able to record an out. The South Adams defense buckled down to prevent further damage, and the offense scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the frame to hang on for the win.
Augsburger, who gave up two runs — one earned — while striking out six and walking one to get the win, had a base hit to drive in the game’s first two runs. Maddie Morgan and Reba Morehouse also drove in runs.
