Starfires take ACAC opener (04/13/04)

South Adams Roundup

South Adams won its season opener last week, and now has started the conference campaign in the same fashion.

The Starfire baseball team put up five runs in the sixth inning Monday to lift it to a 12-10 victory over the Southern Wells Raiders in its first Allen County Athletic Conference game of the season.

South Adams and Southern Wells played their own version of “Match Game” in the first four innings. Both teams scored once in the first inning, three times in the second and three times in the fourth for a 7-7 tie.

The Raider pulled ahead with one run in the fifth inning, but South Adams broke the game open with five runs in the sixth en route to the victory.

Kyle White paced the offensive outburst for the Starfires (3-1, 1-0 ACAC), finishing 2-for-2 with a double. He scored three times and added a pair of RBIs.

Aaron Givens and Michael Yoder were also perfect from the plate, finishing 3-for-3 and 2-for-2 respectively. Givens had two RBIs and scored once, and Yoder scored twice and drove in one run.

Kyle Neuenschwander and Justin Caffee each scored twice, and Doug Roop notched a pair of RBIs.

Justin Caffee took the win, allowing three runs — two earned — on four hits in four innings. He struck out six and walked two.

South Adams will be back in action at Leo Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Track crushes Wayne

Leave it to the freshmen to lead the South Adams girls track team.

Katie Weaver and Haleigh Lehman combined for half of the Starfires wins Monday in an 89-33 destruction of Fort Wayne Wayne.

Weaver won three events for the second straight meet, picking up a pair of those victories in the sprints. She was first in the 100-meter dash in 13.2 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 27.7.

She also took the victory in the long jump at 14 feet, six inches.

Lehman took care of some of the longer distances, picking up her first victory in the 1,600-meter run in 5-minutes, 41 seconds. She also dominated the 800-meter run for an 18-second win in 2:45.

Five other Starfires each picked up one win as they won 12 out of the 15 events. Four athletes combined for domination of the throwing events.

Erin Kruse paced the effort, taking first in the shot put in 30 feet, 51/2 inches. She was also third in the discus at 79 feet.

Holly Yoder won the discus at 88 feet, five inches. Brittany Moser was second in both events with a toss of 81 feet, three inches in the discus and 28 feet, four inches in the shot put.

Stephanie Kruse competed the shot put sweep for South Adams at 27 feet, 111/2 inches.

The Starfires were similarly strong in sweeping both hurdle events.

Chelsey Minnich won the 300-meter hurdles in 58.0, and was second in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.6. Kaitlin Hoover won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.3.

The were trailed by Whitney Sprunger in the 100-meter event in 19.6. Sprunger also took second in the 300-meter hurdles, followed by Danielle Wilkins in 1:05.

Lauren Tooley added the other South Adams victory, finishing the 3,200-meter run in 13:08. Brittany Seeker was second in 14:25.

The Starfires were also first in the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x800-meter relay.

They will be in action along with the boys team Thursday against Wapahani and Union City at Wapahani at 4:30 p.m.

No hits for softball

The second outing didn’t go so well for the South Adams softball team.

After a 10-0 season-opening victory last week, the Starfires went hitless Monday in a 16-0 loss to the Southern Wells Raiders.

South Adams gave up at least one run in each inning in the loss to their Allen County Athletic Conference rivals. Southern Wells (3-1, 1-0 ACAC) took advantage of eight Starfires errors and scored 15 unearned runs.

Renee Neuenschwander was the victim on the mound, allowing nine unearned runs in 31/3 innings. She gave up four hits while striking out four and walking six.

Shante Miller gave up seven runs — six earned — in 12/3 innings.

The Starfires (1-1, 0-1 ACAC) will try to rebound today as they visit Leo at 4:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
