Starfires toss another no-no

BERNE - Ashton Morgan only got to pitch three innings of Wednesday's no-hitter. A day later, she went the distance.

Morgan gave the South Adams High School softball team its second straight no-hitter Thursday, lifting the Starfires to a 1-0 victory over the visiting Allen County Athletic Conference rival Bluffton Tigers.

After combining on a no-hitter Wednesday with Tori Brewster against Randolph Southern, Morgan racked up 14 strikeouts in shutting down Bluffton. The senior allowed just two base runners, one on a walk and one on an error.

Freshman Brianna Nevil singled in the sixth inning, and Liz Smith added an RBI single for the only run of the game. Other hits for SAHS (6-1, 1-0 ACAC) came from Katrina Hawkins, Jana Beitler, Morgan, Kayla Minnich and Logan Chandler.

No. 10 Raiders top JC

Class 2A No. 10 Wapahani didn't have any big innings, just lots of little ones. The Raiders scored single runs in each of the first six innings before getting two in the seventh in an 8-3 victory Thursday over the Jay County baseball team.

Trey Dunn took the loss for the Patriots (3-4), who did not score until the sixth inning. He gave up seven runs - four earned - on six hits and four walks.

Mike Masters hit his team-leading third home run of the season. Colton Lombardo added a single and a run, and Dunn scored a run.

West Jay beats Bears

DUNKIRK - Sweeps in the two shortest races of the day helped lift the West Jay Middle School boys track team to a 58-42 victory Thursday over the Monroe Central Golden Bears.

Blake Crouch and Dalton Eyanson powered the Eagles in the two races with Crouch winning the 100-meter dash in 12.72 seconds ahead of teammates Lucas Wiemer and Tyler Back. Eyanson took first place in the 110 hurdles in 18.87 with Shelby Wendel second and Kyle Murdock third.

Crouch, Eyanson, Wiemer and Back also teamed to win the 4x100 relay in 50.5.

Wiemer added a victory in the 200 dash with a time of 27.56 seconds, and Back had a winning toss of 44 feet in the shot put. Kaelen Jewell took the discus with a toss of 94 feet, 3 inches.

Graat leads Stars

BERNE - Bryanna Graat earned three victories to power the South Adams Middle School girls track team to an 82-27 win Wednesday over the Southern Wells Raiders. The Starfire boys also topped Southern Wells, 91-18.

Graat swept the sprints for the SAMS girls, taking first place in the 100-meter dash in 13.6 seconds and the 200 dash in 29.9. She also won the long jump at 12 feet, 11 ½ inches.

Michaela Rupp added victories in the 100 hurdles and 200 hurdles, and Leah Mitchel finished first in the shot put and discus. Other individual winners for the girls team were Kristen Muselman and Olivia Turner.

Cam Lengerich and Evan Liechty each won a pair of events for the South Adams boys. Lengerich was first in the 100 hurdles in 20.4 and long jump at 13 feet, 2 inches, and Liechty took the 800 run in 2-minutes, 25 seconds and the 1,600 run with a time of 5:05.

Andrew Steffen, Mitchell Kaverman, Alex Kistler, Drew Litwiller and Anthony Martin added one win apiece.

EJMS defeats Northside

MUNCIE - Malarie Houck and Tasya Smith each won two events Thursday as the East Jay Middle School track team defeated Muncie Northside 47-44. The Chief boys lost to Northside, 46-45.

Houck took first place in the hurdles in 18.66 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, 1 inches. Smith won the 100-meter dash and 200 dash in times of 14.13 and 32.6 respectively.

Abigail Johnson added the only other win for the EJMS girls, finishing the 1,600 run in 6-minutes, 33 seconds.

Cody Bellis and Dylan Cope scored two victories apiece for the boys team. Bellis was first in the shot put (41 feet, 6 inches) and long jump (15 feet event), and Cope took the 400 dash (1:03) and the 1,600 run (5:33).

Corey Bellis was first in the hurdles in 19.03, and Willie Skiver took the 800 run in 2:35.[[In-content Ad]]
