HUNTINGTON - The South Adams High School boys golf team closed its season Friday with a 10th-place finishing in the sectional tournament.
The Starfires post a score of 371 at the 12-team event hosted by Huntington North at Lafontaine Golf Club to finish 10 strokes before ninth-place Southern Wells. Fifth-ranked Norwell edged the host Vikings by two strokes for the sectional title with a score of 305.
Alex Habegger and Mark Smith shared the best score for the Starfires, each shooting 90. Each had four pars with all of Habegger's coming in the first 10 holes and Smith closing his round with three straight.
Norwell's McCormick Clouser took medalist honors on the second hole of a playoff against Huntington North's E.J. Tackett. Both players shot 71.
Mark Muselman had four pars in his round of 95 for South Adams, and Stuart Poulson completed the team score with a 96. Daniel Heckard shot 108.
Rockets drop pair
CELINA, Ohio - A trip to Mercer County brought two more losses for the Portland Rockets Sunday as they fell 4-2 and 4-0 to the host Grand Lake Mariners.
The Portland bats struggled all day against the Mariners' pitching, totalling just three hits while striking out 23 times.
South Adams High School graduate Daniel Bollenbacher gave the Rockets a chance in the opening as he struck out six batters and allowed just three hits before leaving the game in the sixth inning with the game tied 2-2. But Grand Lake scored two runs, both unearned, in the bottom of the sixth for the final margin.
Trevor Kill took the game-two loss, giving up four runs in three innings. Tyler Mills and Bill Geeslin combined for three scoreless innings of relief.
Rines aces again
Scott Rines recorded his third career hole-in-one Wednesday at Portland Golf Club.
The shot came with a pitching wedge on the 135-yard, par-3 eighth hole at PGC during men's league play. Bruce Hedges, Clyde Bray and Eldon Morrical witnessed the shot.[[In-content Ad]]
