INDIANAPOLIS — A loss to a state-ranked squad dropped the Starfires, but not by much.
South Adams fell two spots to seventh in this week’s Class 1A Associated Press high school football poll, which was released this morning.
The Starfires, who are off to their best start in more than a decade at 4-1, earned 102 poll points to finish 20 ahead of No. 8 West Central. They were 16 behind sixth-ranked Rockville, and two-time defending state champion Lafayette Catholic remained No. 1.
Leo handed SAHS its first loss of the season Friday, 30-6. The Lions entered that game ranked 10th in the state in Class 4A, and have moved up to sixth this week.
South Adams will look to bounce back Friday when it visits Adams Central.

Fort freshmen split
MINSTER, Ohio — The Fort Recovery freshman volleyball team picked up a 25-16, 25-20 victory Monday over the Russia Raiders before falling 25-15, 22-25, 25-22 to the Minster Wildcats.
Caley Schoenherr finished with three kills and three points in the Tribe’s win. Rachel Pugh scored eight points, and Emilie Sheridan had two assists.
Against Minster, Jurnee Bechtol totaled eight points and two assists for FRHS (4-5). Schoenherr had six digs and three kills, and Pugh finished with three points and two kills.

Eagles defeat EJ
The East Jay Middle School
eighth grade volleyball team dropped a 25-14, 25-17 decision Monday to the visiting Delta Eagles. The sixth graders lost 25-14, 25-14.
Kylie Osborne finished with three kills, three assists and two blocks for the eighth grade Chiefs, who dropped to 5-7. Abby Wendel scored three points, and Ava Kunkler had three kills.
Kaylee Inman paced the sixth grade team with four points. She also had 12 points, including five aces, Saturday as her squad placed seventh out of eight teams at the Selma Invitational.

Chiefs win pair
UNION CITY — The East Jay seventh grade football team scored a 20-0 shutout Thursday over host West Side, and the eighth graders picked up a 20-12 win.
Ian Reynolds gave the seventh grade team all the points it would need on an 18-yard touchdown run, and Ivan Hemmelgarn and Jason Schlosser added scoring runs of 10 and 8 yards respectively. Jay Houck had an interception in the shutout.
Levi Hummel did all of the scoring for the EJMS eighth graders, opening with a 75-yard kickoff return for a TD in the first quarter. He added TD runs of 40 and 30 yards, and had a two-point conversion run.

Two score three
Payton Nichols and Lyndon Brinkerhoff each scored three touchdowns Saturday in Jay Community Center’s flag football league.
Nichols led Orange to a 44-32 victory over Green in the pre-school/kindergarten division, and Brinkerhoff carried Red to a 20-14 win over Navy Blue. Justin Hoover, Cadin Ridenour and Josh Dowlen each scored twice in Gold’s 36-12 win over Green in the first through third grade division.
In JCC’s fall soccer league, Gavin Muhlenkamp scored six times to pace Columbia Blue over Orange 8-0 in the first/second grade division, and Zaaron Lee had six goals for Red in a 6-4 victory over Royal Blue in the fifth/sixth grade division. Other scoring leaders were Danielle May and Keegan Wasson with five goals apiece in the pre-school/kindergarten division, Chip Wendel with four in the seventh/eighth grade division and Brinnin Wasson with three in the third/fourth grade division.[[In-content Ad]]
