Stars cruise to win

BERNE — The South Adams High School cross country teams rolled to a couple of victories Tuesday.
The boys team swept the top five positions in a 15-48 victory over the visiting Woodlan Warriors. And the Starfire girls were nearly perfect in a 16-39 victory.
Eric Isch set the pace for the South Adams boys with his victory in 17 minutes, 17 seconds. Evan Liechty finished in 17:38, and Brody Shane was 10 seconds behind him in third.
Joel Hawbaker crossed the finish line in 18:18, and Simon Sprunger completed the sweep with a time of 18:32.
Sawyer Shane, Hannah Moore, Jenna Smith and Kristen Muselman all ran together, taking the top four spots with matching times of 22:03. Allison Amstutz was sixth at 22:54.
SA netters lose
BERNE — The Adams Central Flying Jets dropped the host South Adams boys tennis team to 1-1 in the Allen County Athletic Conference Tuesday, handing them a 3-2 defeat.
The doubles teams, who went to three sets apiece, decided the match. Ian Frank and Reid Zurcher pulled out a 7-6 (9-7), 2-6, 6-3 victory for the Starfires, but Derek Schwartz and Kegan Sprunger dropped their No. 1 doubles match 0-6, 6-4, 5-7.
At No. 3 singles, Scott Hoeppner earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Alex Huber fell 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and Mark Muselman lost 6-1, 6-3 in No. 2 singles action.
The South Adams junior varsity team lost 6-3 to the Flying Jets.
Star spikers stumble
BERNE — South Adam’s volleyball team rallied to within a game of their third victory of the year only to fall 25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 17-25, 15-8 to the visiting Southern Wells Raiders.
Taylor Farlow totaled 17 digs, 15 kills and six blocks as the comeback fell just short. Lily Taing added 19 assists, 12 digs and seven aces.
The Starfire junior varsity squad won 25-10, 25-19. Shelby Mellencamp racked up seven aces and five digs in the win.
Tribe freshmen fall
VERSAILLES, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s freshman football team suffered a 40-14 loss Tuesday to the Versailles Tigers.
Kyle Timmerman scored both touchdowns for the Indians. Wyatt Blockberger added a 2-point conversion pass to Ben Dilworth.
SA gridders split
BERNE — The South Adams eighth grade football team defeated the Bluffton Tigers 6-0 Tuesday, and the seventh grade team lost 6-0.
Mason Morningstar scored the lone touchdown in the eighth grade game on a 63-yard interception return on the final play of the opening half. Matt Nussbaum ran four times for 60 yards, and Derek Wanner led the defense with 13 tackles and an interception.
In the seventh grade game Justin Nussbaum went 5-of-5 passing for 38 yards and ran for 22 yards. Matt Hilton finished with six tackles.
Fort eighth wins
FORT RECOVERY — Haley Knapke turned in a dominant serving effort to lead the Fort Recovery eighth grade volleyball team to a 25-11, 22-25, 25-13 victory Tuesday over the New Bremen Cardinals. The seventh graders fell 25-9, 25-8.
Knapke racked up 20 service points, five of which came on aces, for the eighth grade squad (2-1). She also had a pair of blocks.
Tori Lennartz added 11 kills and Cassidy Rammel had eight assists.
Kendra Siefring had four points and one kill for the seventh grade Indians (1-2). Julie Wendel also scored four points, and Trisha Thien had two assists and a kill.[[In-content Ad]]
