Stars crush South Side (04/19/04)

Local Roundup

If the Archers want to return for another double-header, the South Adams baseball team would almost certainly oblige.

The Starfires crushed six home runs — three in each game — on the way to a pair of crushing wins over Fort Wayne South Side Saturday, 14-6 and 13-3.

Kyle White boasted the most game-one power, blasting a pair of home runs as South Adams scored three runs in each of the first three innings. South Side did not score until it already trailed 9-0, and never got close.

White finished 2-for-2 with both of his hits going over the fence for homers. He scored three times and drove in three runs.

Doug Roop knocked out the other home run for the Starfires. He went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.

Aaron Givens doubled, scored twice and drove in two runs, and Kyle Neuenschwander had two doubles, a run and an RBI. Craig Neuenschwander went 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

Justin Caffee picked up the win, allowing six runs — one earned — on seven hits in the complete game. He walked one and racked up 12 strikeouts.

Caffee went on to blast one of the home runs in game two, with Aaron Givens and Austin Givens joining him. They helped the Starfires to score four runs in each of the first two innings, and add five in the fifth to end the contest.

Austin Givens had three RBIs, and Aaron Givens had a pair.

Kyle Neuenschwander notched three hits, including one double, stole two bases and scored three times. William Grandlienard doubled and drove in two runs, and Tony Van Gelder and Cole Scheiderer also doubled in the contest.

Tony Van Gelder took the game-two win, allowing three runs — one earned — in five innings. He gave up six hits while walking one and striking out two.

The Starfires will host Heritage Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

T’birds split

The Jay County Thunderbirds (2-1) under-14 soccer team defeated Centerville Saturday 3-2, but lost Sunday against Rushville 3-2.
