Stars defeat UC, get tourney bye (05/19/05)

South Adams roundup

BERNE — The South Adams baseball team topped the Union City Indians 4-1 Wednesday night, then got some good news as the sectional draw was announced today. The Starfires got a first-round bye and will have Memorial Day off before playing their first tournament game against Fort Wayne Harding in the semifinal round at Woodlan Tuesday, May 31.

South Adams jumped on Union City early, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. The Indians scored their lone run in the second to pull within one, but the Starfires added single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings for the final margin.

Mike Farris was the main man on both offense and defense for South Adams as he earned the win and scored two runs.

The only run against him was unearned as he relinquished seven hits in seven innings. He struck out four and walked two.

Farris also had a triple, and stole a couple of bases.

Jordan Sharp added a single, two RBIs and a stolen base.

The Woodlan sectional will begin on Monday, May 30 with Bluffton taking on the host Warriors at 10 a.m. and Heritage against Adams Central at 12:30 p.m. The winners of those games will play in semifinal action at 3 p.m.

The other semifinal game will be between South Adams and Harding Tuesday, May 31 at 4:30 p.m. The championship game will be Friday, June 3 at 4:30 p.m.

No. 8 Bruins top softball

BERNE — South Adams stayed within striking distance of one of Class 3A’s best teams for six innings Thursday, but lost any chance in the seventh.

The Starfires trailed just 3-0 to eighth-ranked Blackford after six frames, but the Bruins scored eight times in the top of the seventh and won 11-3.

Ashley Augsberger took the loss as she tossed the final two innings in relief of starter Amber Melick. She allowed eight runs — five earned — on four hits.

Melick had given up three runs on five hits in the opening five innings.

Renee Neuenschwander paced South Adams (9-11) with two hits and a run. Kindle Inniger had one hit, one run and one RBI.[[In-content Ad]]
