BERNE - The Starfires took an early lead and stayed in control as they pulled within a game of .500 Tuesday.

Nick Teeter and Dan Bollenbacher did all the scoring for the South Adams High School boys basketball team in the first quarter, pushing them to a 14-6 lead on the way to their 54-39 victory over the visiting Union City Indians.

SAHS pushed ahead by 10 at the half and then outscored the Indians 14-5 in the third period. It is now 7-8 on the season, having won four of its last six after a six-game losing streak.

Bollenbacher was consistent all night, scoring at least four points in every quarter en route to a game-high of 20. Teeter finished with 13 points.

Roy Frazier scored 18 points for Union City (9-5) in the defeat. Taylor Jenkison added 13, including three fourth-quarter 3-pointers.

Tribe 8th perfect in MAC

FORT RECOVERY - With conference perfection in their sights, the Indians played with defensive dominance Tuesday.

The Fort Recovery eighth grade girls basketball team blanked the New Bremen Cardinals in the second quarter, rolling to a 32-8 victory. The squad finished the regular season 13-1 overall and 9-0 in the Midwest Athletic Conference with their only loss this season coming against East Jay.

The seventh grade Indians also closed with a win, 19-16 over New Bremen.

Kylie Kahlig scored seven points to pace the eighth graders, who were up 14-2 at halftime. Becca Tobe added five points.

Janelle Schwieterman racked up 10 points for the seventh grade team (11-3). Rachel Rammel had six points and five rebounds.

WJ grapplers win

DUNKIRK - West Jay Middle School's wrestling team came up with seven pins Tuesday in a 48-30 victory over visiting Union City Westside.

Two Eagles scored pins in the opening minute, including Dylan Harris' win in 35 seconds at 160 pounds. Donny Cosner finished off the 152-pound match in 50 seconds.

Other pins came from Carrolton Fischer (110) in 1-minute, 10 seconds, Sam Pitman (115) in 1:45, Travis Callahan (145) in 1:55, Nathan Drumm (120) in 3:02 and Chase Louck (105) in 3:07.

Fort boys fall

GREENVILLE - The Fort Recovery Middle School boys basketball teams couldn't keep up with the Green Wave Tuesday, each falling by double digits to Greenville. The eight graders fell 58-44, and the seventh grade team suffered a 46-28 defeat.

Jared Kahlig scored 15 points for the eighth grade squad (1-13), which trailed 33-23 at the half and got outscored 14-6 in the third quarter. Jason Pottkotter added nine points, and Jacob Whitacre added eight.

The Tribe seventh graders (3-11) led by one at the half, but Greenville took a 27-8 advantage in the second half. Chad Schroer and Keith Fortkamp each finished with 10 points.

Chiefs top Yorktown

The East Jay Middle School sixth grade girls basketball team bounced back from its first loss of the season Saturday with a 28-25 victory over the Yorktown Tigers.

Katlin Petro powered the Chiefs (8-1) with team highs of 10 points and four rebounds. Alex Loy added six points.

Sara Bollenbacher had eight points and Cheyanne Dull finished with four points and 10 rebounds as the EJMS B team (6-1) won 22-16.
