GENEVA — The Patriots had the only birdie of the night, but the Starfires claimed the victory.
South Adams High School’s boys golf team earned a one-stroke win Thursday, edging Jay County 191-192 at Golf Club of the Limberlost.
Justin Keller of the Patriots and Mark Smith of the Starfires each had four pars as they shared medalist honors with scores of 42.
JCHS sophomore Evan Mathias had the second-best score of the day with a 46. However, South Adams got a 48 from Derek Fox, a 50 from Chase Mosser and a 51 from Brad Green to take the win.
Jay County’s Adam Alfont had the lone birdie of the day on the 115-yard, par-3 12th hole on the way to shooting 50. Dylan Friddle finished with a 54.

Wanner, Fox lead
BERNE — Dustin Wanner and Blake Fox each went deep Thursday, helping lift the South Adams baseball team to a 14-12 victory over the visiting Adams Central Flying Jets.
Wanner went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a single to go along with his home run. He drove in four runs and scored four times.
Fox’s home run was his lone hit of the day as he scored twice and had two RBIs. Corey Seffernick went 2-for-3 with four runs, and Collin Affolder added four RBIs.
Wanner also picked up the victory despite allowing 12 runs — nine earned — on 15 hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings. Nick Batt got the final out to earn the save.

Indians top JC
Jay County’s softball team struggled to find much offense Thursday in a 5-1 loss to the visiting Anderson Indians.
Anderson took control with two runs in the top of the second inning and then tacked on three runs in the fifth. The Patriots scored their only run in the bottom of the fifth.
Rachelle Jackson suffered the loss as she gave up five runs — four earned — on eight hits and five walks. She struck out five batters.
Catherine Dunn doubled and drove in Chelsea Tighe for the lone JCHS run of the game. Lexie Gierhart also had a double, and Nikka Chaney recorded the only other hit for the Patriots (12-8).

AC defeats Stars
BERNE — The host South Adams softball team finished with just three hits Thursday in a 7-1 loss to the Adams Central Flying Jets.
Adams Central scored four times in the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie. The Starfires responded with one run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Flying Jets notched three runs in the top of the fifth to put the game away.
Alyssa Bluhm took the defeat, giving up seven runs — five earned — on 10 hits and a walk. She struck out six batters.
Alaina Johnston tripled and scored the only run on an RBI from Bluhm. Lyndsey Chandler had a pair of hits.

Jay JV tops Tigers
ALEXANDRIA — A six-run fourth inning sparked the Jay County junior varsity baseball team Thursday in a 9-4 victory over the Alexandria Tigers.
The Patriots broke a scoreless tie with their big fourth inning and then added two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. Alexandria never closed the gap to fewer than four runs.
Taylor Fugiett earned the victory as he tossed three innings before giving way to Tanner Reynolds and Chaz Carroll.
Shawn Winget went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run and an RBI to lead JCHS (5-8), and Reynolds was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI. Nick Clemens, Mitchel Kunkler, Carroll and Fugiett each had one hit, one run and one RBI.[[In-content Ad]]
