Stars fall short against Rangers (01/28/05)

BERNE — The South Adams girls basketball team picked up its first win Tuesday. It tried for its second and its first back-to-back wins in three seasons Thursday, but fell a bit short in a 62-49 loss to the Class A No. 4 Southern Wells Raiders.
The Starfires (1-14, 0-4 Allen County Athletic Conference) trailed Southern Wells by just one after the first quarter, but the deficit expanded to 30-21 at the half. They couldn’t rally against the Raiders (15-1) after the break.
Kindle Inniger paced South Adams with 12 points, and Kayla Coblentz and Julie Muhlenkamp each added 11. Coblentz and Muhlenkamp shared the team-high of six rebounds.
Inniger had four steals and two blocks, and Muhlenkamp finished with three steals and two blocks. Brooke Fox grabbed six rebounds, and Coblentz dished out three assists.
Heather Roush paced Southern Wells with 18 points, and Courtney Kinser added 13.
South Adams lost the junior varsity contest to Southern Wells, 27-21.
Carroll tops tankers
BERNE — Matt Kruse won two events again and South Adams won six of 11 events overall, but it still wasn’t quite enough to stop the Fort Wayne Carroll Chargers Thursday. The Starfire boys swim team lost 86-84 to Carroll, and the girls took a 104-66 defeat.
Kruse, a freshman, continued to lead the boys team as he won two individual events and contributed to South Adams’ lone relay victory. He fought off Ben Gebhard in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.08 seconds and then dominated the 200-yard freestyle by 10 seconds with a time of 1-minute, 56.57 seconds.
He also teamed with Heath Lehman, Carson Sprunger and John Gresla to take first in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:41.80.
Lehman took the 50-yard freestyle in 24.42, and Sprunger won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.94. Brent Hirschey won with 100-yard freestyle in 57.42.
Chelsea Yoder, Channing Yoder and Haleigh Lehman accounted for the Starfire girls team’s three wins.
Lehman was first in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:07.09. Chelsea Yoder took the 50-yard freestyle in 26.84, and Channing Yoder won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:19.64.[[In-content Ad]]
