Stars' Habegger voted first team all state (11/30/06)

Local roundup

The South Adams football team had its best tournament run in a decade this season and picked up more awards today honoring that effort.

Senior linebacker Brent Habegger, who was also the lead tailback for SAHS, was named to the Class 2A All-State first team.

Several other area athletes earned all-state honorable mention from The Associated Press, including the Starfires' Dustin Cressman at defensive back. Jay County quarterback Billy Wellman, receiver Justin Mann, defensive linemen Corey Comer and Alex Michael and defensive backs Clint Muhlenkamp and Michael Jobe all earned honorable mention in Class 4A.

Habegger, a 6-foot, 205-pounder, finished second in the state in tackles per game with 16.7. He had 120 solo tackles and 80 assists for a total of 200.

"He's probably the best linebacker we've had here at South Adams," said Starfire coach Kirk Sorg, who has headed the program for 22 years. "He's just got a super sense for the game and a real nose for the ball."

Cressman tied for 15th in the state with six interceptions for SAHS, which made it to the sectional championship game for the first time since 1996.

Wellman, a Jay County sophomore, completed 62 passes for 1,281 yards and 16 touchdowns this season. Many of those passes went to Mann, a junior, who finished with 26 catches for 536 yards and five touchdowns.

Muhlenkamp, a junior, led the Patriot defense with 70 tackles and four interceptions. Comer (46 tackles) had a team-high five sacks in his senior season.

The 35 solo tackles by Jobe, a junior, were a team high as he finished with 63 total. Michael totaled 58 tackles in his senior year.

Jay County finished 6-5 this year, giving the school back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1988.
