Stars open vs. Bluffton (05/12/04)

The South Adams softball team will need to do some things differently if they hope to make any kid of noise in the sectional tournament. The Starfires will meet the Bluffton Tigers in the first sectional contest at Woodlan.

The sectional draw was released this week.

Bluffton defeated the Starfires 9-2 in their regular-season meeting this year. The teams will rematch Tuesday, May 25 at 4:45 p.m.

The host Warriors will take on Fort Wayne Harding in the other first-round game Wednesday, May 26 at 4:45 p.m.

The South Adams/Bluffton and the Fort Wayne Harding/Woodlan winners will play in the first semifinal contest Saturday, May 29 at 10 a.m. Heritage and Adams Central drew first-round byes and will play in the other semifinal Saturday at noon.

The championship game will also be played Saturday, May 29 at 3 p.m.

Junior League

A big third inning got Coca-Cola back in the game Tuesday night, but Graphic Printing held off the comeback try in a 15-14 victory in Portland Junior League Rookie League softball action.

Portland Kiwanis knocked off Local 1620 11-5 in the lone Pee Wee Reese baseball game of the night. In Rookie League baseball games Pak-a-Sak edged Ja-Mar T.V. and Appliance 9-7, and Portland Optimist topped Main Source Bank 8-3.

Graphic Printing held a 12-4 lead after two innings, but Coca-Cola came roaring back with seven runs in the third. However, Graphic put up three runs in the bottom of the third and the Coke comeback try fell one run short in the fourth.

Melony Eley had three hits and three runs for Graphic, and Hannah Ainsworth had two hits, including a double, and two runs. Kayla Johnson finished with two hits and two runs.

Justine Wallischeck had three hits and scored four times for Coca-Cola.

Kiwanis 11, Local 1620 5

Isaac Bruggeman paced Kiwanis with two hits, three runs and two RBIs. Tyler Aker had two hits, including a double, two RBIs and a run, and Ben Vance singled and scored three times.

Christopher Skirvin knocked two hits — a double and a triple — for Local 1620 and added a run and an RBI.

SA tops Bruins

The South Adams boys track team got the job done, winning the 4x400-meter relay to swipe a 62-61 victory from the Blackford Bruins Monday. The Starfire girls also defeated Blackford, 76-47.

The boys meet came down to the final race, and the South Adams team finished 11 seconds in front of the Bruins in 3-minutes, 35 seconds to take the team win. It also won the 4x100-meter relay.

Phil Schmidt was the lone Starfire boy to win two events. He was first in the 100-meter dash in 11.3 seconds, and won the long jump at 18 feet 11 inches.

Adam Zimmerman was second in the 200-meter dash, and Kyle Litwiller was second in the long jump.

Zimmerman picked up a victory in the 400-meter dash in 54.1. Litwiller completed the sprint sweep with a first-place effort in the 100-meter dash in 11.3.

Darius Martens took the 300-meter hurdles in 44.1, and Tim Conrad won the 800-meter run in 2:06.

Katie Weaver continued to be the story of the season for the girls team as she posted three individual wins.

Weaver captured the 100-meter dash in 13.2 and the 200-meter dash in 27.7 She also grabbed the win in the long jump at 15 feet, 73/4 inches.

Kaitlin Hoover finished first with a time of 16.8 in the 100-meter hurdles, and Chelsey Minnich took the 300-meter hurdles in 51.0. Haleigh Lehman won the 1,600-meter run in 6:01, Katie Welch topped the field in the 800-meter run in 2:43 and Lauren Tooley dominated the 3,200-meter run by more than 40 seconds in 13:22.

The South Adams girls also won all three relays.

The Starfires will compete in the Allen County Athletic Conference meet at Bluffton Friday at 5 p.m.

Golf outing

State of the Heart Home, Health & Hospice will host its annual golf outing Friday, June 4.

The event will be at the Elks in Mercer County, with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. It will be limited to 32 teams.
