SAHS/JCHS cross country
HARTFORD CITY - The Starfires and Patriots fared well Saturday in a field that included some state-ranked competition.
South Adams High School's girls cross country team was third at the Blackford Invitational with 114 points in the 23-team closed division that included 20th-ranked champion West Noble (37).
The Jay County girls scored 168 points to place fifth out of 13 teams in the open division in which No. 11 Huntington North (24) won ahead of DeKalb (54) and No. 14 Westfield (71).
The SAHS boys placed fifth with 154 points in the 20-team closed division while Yorktown won with 63.
Sophomore Hannah Moore set the pace for the Starfire girls as she placed seventh in 19 minutes, 58 seconds. Sawyer Shane was 13th in 20:18, and Kristen Muselman took 18th at 20:31.
Jenna Smith placed 40th with a time of 22:18, and Adrianna Teeter was two spots behind her in 22:25.
Jay County's girls had just one runner - Leah Wellman - in the top 25. She was 24th in 21:15 as Huntington North and DeKalb combined to take 13 of the top 23 positions.
Katie Simmons followed in 31st in 21:51, and Aly Miller finished in 22:06 for 33rd. Kari Hemmelgarn was 45th in 22:36, and Logan Laux capped the team score in 47th with a time of 22:41.
Starfire freshman Evan Liechty turned in the best individual finish for the local teams as he broke the 17-minute mark with a time of 16:55.37 for sixth place. Sam Heckard was 21st in 17:43.
Joel Hawbaker placed 24th with a time of 17:48 ahead of Andrew Steffen (41st - 18:29) and Andrew Smith (70th - 19:13).
Tevan Nichols was the first runner to cross the finish line for the Patriot boys, who do not have enough runners for a team score, as he had a time of 18:04 for 43rd place in the open division. Dylan Cope was 66th in 19:10.
Kyle Scott finished in 22:57 for 89th place, and Zach Johnson was 92nd in 23:32.
Also running were Brooke Kirchhofer (43rd - 22:27) and Emily Miller (80th - 23:33) for the SAHS girls, Megan Taylor (56th - 23:17) and Liz Lennartz (57th - 23:21) for the JCHS girls and Brett Affolder (76th - 19:23) and Daniel Heckard (91st - 19:42) for the SAHS boys.
