BERNE — The Starfires came through late Tuesday to salvage a split.
South Adams High School’s softball team scored once in the bottom of the seventh inning of its second game against the visiting Heritage Patriots and again in the ninth for a 6-5 victory. The Starfires dropped the first game 10-0.
Lily Taing had a double, a run and an RBI for the Starfires (2-5) in the game-two victory, and Lyndsey Chandler had a pair of hits and a run. Alyssa Bluhm added two hits and two stolen bases.
Bluhm also earned the win, giving up just one earned run on nine hits and three walks in nine innings. She gave up seven runs — three earned — on six hits and a walk in two innings to take the game-one defeat.
Brittany Pugsley had two hits in the opener, and Brianna Nevil, Rachel Hirschy and Bluhm added one hit apiece.

Tribe softball falls
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery softball team scored its only run in the first inning Tuesday in a 4-1 loss to the Coldwater Cavaliers.
Shelby Brunswick had a double and a stolen base, and scored the lone run for the Indians (8-8, 1-2 Midwest Athletic Conference. Kendra Brunswick also had a double, and Olivia Thien, Janelle Schwieterman, Stacy Gehle and Karissa Will all added hits in the loss.
Andi Sutter suffered the defeat against the Cavaliers (6-7, 1-2 MAC) as she allowed four runs — three earned — on nine hits.
She struck out two batters and did not allow a walk.

Isch, Myers lead
PONETO — South Adams’ track teams finished second Tuesday to the Leo Lions in a three-team meet hosted by the Southern Wells Raiders.
The Starfire boys scored 62 points to finish 11 off the pace, and the girls were the runners-up by 32 with 51.5.
Senior Eric Isch powered the boys team with wins in the distance events. He was first in the 1,600 run in 4 minutes, 55 seconds and the 3,200 run in 10:50.
Trisha Myers picked up two of the girls team’s three victories as she swept the hurdles. She won the 100 hurdles in 17.6 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 55.8.
Other victories came from Tim Lehman (400 dash – 4:55) and Joel Schmidt (300 hurdles – 42.8) for the boys, and Hannah Moore (1,600 run – 5:58) for the girls.

’Cats no-hit FR
FORT RECOVERY — The Minster Wildcats held Fort Recovery’s baseball team hitless Wednesday in handing the Indians a 17-0, six-inning defeat.
Shane Pottkotter suffered the loss, giving up nine runs — eight earned — on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings. Minster scored eight times in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game early.
Ryan Gaerke, Gabe Riegel and Jacob Muhlenkamp each drew walks for the Indians.

SA tennis falls
BERNE — The doubles duos came through Tuesday, but the host South Adams girls tennis team got swept in singles action in a 3-2 loss to the Bluffton Tigers.
Lindsey Graber and Kassy Potts turned in a straight sets victory for the Starfires (1-7) at No. 1 doubles to win 6-4, 6-1 over Amanda Stone and Allison Williams. Abbie Campbell and Holly Taylor rallied at No. 2 doubles to defeat Hannah Gilliam and Gina Eisenhut 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.
Mallory Eicher won her first set at No. 3 singles, only to suffer a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Anessa Reiff. Aine O’Donnell lost 6-2, 6-1 to Kara Fiechter at No. 1 singles, and Alex Fox fell 6-1, 6-0 to Megan Evans in No. 2 singles action.
The SAHS junior varsity team lost 4-3 with victories from Megan Hreha, Erika Miller and Tiffany Yoder.

Heritage tops SA baseball
BERNE — South Adam’s baseball team gave up six first-inning runs Tuesday in a 7-4 loss to the visiting Heritage Patriots.
Taylor Smith took the loss for the Starfires, who out-hit Heritage 7-3 but also committed four errors.
