Stars rally to 2-0

South Adams roundup

FORT WAYNE — Down two games to one, the Starfires fought back to give themselves consecutive victories to open the season.
South Adams, which rolled over Blackford in three games in Monday’s season opener, rallied for a 20-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-18, 15-9 win Thursday over the host Canterbury Cavaliers.
Alyssa Bluhm set the pace for the Starfires, who are trying to bounce back after winning just five matches last season, with 14 digs, 13, assists and five kills. Chelsea Bollenbacher racked up 13 digs, nine kills, four blocks and four aces.
Alyssa Armenta came up with 14 digs, Lily Taing totaled 13 assists and Cady Farlow added six kills and six blocks.
In junior varsity action South Adams fell 25-13, 25-21 to the Cavaliers. Mackenzie Jennings had eight digs, four assists and two kills.

Boys tennis rolls
BERNE — A pair of shutout victories keyed South Adams Thursday in a 4-1 victory over the Bishop Luers Saints.
Mark Muselman blanked Colin Hire 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles for the Starfires (2-0), and the team of Ian Frank and Derek Schwartz won by the same score of Isaiah Klotz and Paul Buta in the No. 1 doubles match. At No. 1 singles Scott Hoeppner defeated Sam Scheer 6-1, 6-1, and at No. 2 doubles J.D. Tarr and Jon Steffen topped Luke Scheer and Canyon Zwick 6-1, 6-3.
Brayden Myers fell 6-3, 6-4 to Eric Woehnker at No. 3 singles.
South Adams won the junior varsity match 5-0 with Landon Lehman and Dylan Pierce each turning in 8-2 victories in singles action.

Golfers top two
GENEVA — The Starfires were outstanding on the ninth hole Thursday at Golf Club of the Limberlost as they defeated a pair of opponents.
South Adams’ top four golfers played the final hole on their home course at a combined 2-under-par as they scored a 196 to defeat the Fort Wayne North Side Redskins (245) and Fort Wayne South Side Archers (255).
Kristen Lehman closed out her round with a par on the 85-yard, par-3 ninth hole. She also had pars on the 236-yard, par-4 fourth and the 258-yard, par-4 seventh on the way to leading the Starfires with a 47.
Kiersten Durben had the best score for North Side with a 50, and Zoey Brehm shot 55 for South Side.
Sam Schwartz and Kristal All each birdied the final hole to shoot 49 and 51 respectively. Abbie Fisher match Lehman with a par on No. 9 and carded a 49.

Girls soccer falls
FORT WAYNE — A rough second half led to a 6-2 South Adams loss Thursday to the host Blackhawk Christian Braves.
The Starfires (0-2) were in the game at halftime, tied 1-1 with Blackhawk Christian after a goal by Samantha Sprunger off of an Alaina Johnston assist. However, the Braves tallied five consecutive goals in the second half to take control.
Sharon Balsiger of SAHS scored on an assist from Erika Miller for the final margin.
Brianna Nevil had 14 saves for the Starfires.[[In-content Ad]]
