WOODBURN — Collin Affolder had already dominated the Warriors before walking to the plate in the sixth inning. Then he took it a step further.
The sophomore crushed a grand slam to end the game early Tuesday as the South Adams High School baseball team clobbered the host Woodlan Warriors 12-1 in six innings.
Affolder finished a perfect 4-for-4 with the home run, a double, five RBIs and three runs for the Starfires, who trailed after the first inning before scoring 12 unanswered runs. Dustin Wanner added three hits, three runs and an RBI, and Corey Seffernick had a double, two RBIs and a run.
Blake Fox went the distance to earn the win, striking out seven. He gave up just one unearned run on five hits and did not walk a batter.

Tribe falls to NB
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery baseball team proved it can play with the top teams in the Midwest Athletic Conference, pushing the league-leading New Bremen Cardinals Tuesday in a 3-1 defeat.
Kent Retz took the loss for the Indians, who will play MAC-rival and defending state champion Minster (19-6) in today’s sectional championship game. He allowed three runs — one earned — while striking out two in 5 1/3 innings.
Shane Pottkotter went 2-for-3 and scored a run for the Tribe (8-15, 1-7 MAC). Chad Schroer had a hit and an RBI, and Collin O’Dell delivered a double.
The Indians had lost three MAC games by one run before Tuesday’s two-run loss to the Cardinals.

Warriors blank SA
WOODBURN — The Class 3A No. 3 Woodlan Warriors dominated the South Adams softball team Tuesday, handing it a 10-0, five-inning defeat.
Woodlan put up one run in the first inning and then blew the game open with eight runs in the second. It scored once in the third for the final margin.
Alyssa Bluhm took the loss, giving up nine runs — seven earned — on eight hits and three walks in just 1 1/3 innings of work. Lilly Taing finished the game in relief.
Lauren Smith had the lone hit for the Starfires (9-12)

Fort JV loses
NEW BREMEN, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s junior varsity baseball team slipped to 3-16 on the season Tuesday with a 5-2 loss to the New Bremen Cardinals.
The game was tied at 2-2 before New Bremen scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings for the win.
Nate Lochtefeld suffered the defeat, giving up five runs — four earned — on four hits and seven walks in five innings. Derek Backs pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Ryan Muhlenkamp finished with a single, a walk and an RBI to lead the Tribe offense. Cole Wendel added a hit, and Back scored a run.

Star girls third
BLUFFTON — The South Adams Middle School girls track team placed third Tuesday with 73 points at the Allen County Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Bluffton. The boys team was seventh in the eight-team field with 25.5 points.
Adams Central took both the boys and girls titles with 115.5 and 112 points respectively.
Three SAMS girls earned conference titles, with Olivia VonGunten taking the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 55.48 seconds. Caroline Kloepper was first in the 200 dash in 28.62, and Emma Rosswurm took the high jump at 4 feet, 8 inches.
Drew LeFever turned in the top finish for the Starfire boys with a toss of 34 feet, 5½ inches for fourth place in the shot put.[[In-content Ad]]
