MONROE — With a pair of wins, the Starfires locked up the conference title.
South Adams High School’s boys and girls cross country teams secured the Allen County Athletic Conference round-robin championship Tuesday with victories over the Garrett Railroaders and host Adams Central Flying Jets.
The boys team won 17-42 over Adams Central and 19-40 over Garrett while the girls posted victories of 23-32 and 22-35 respectively.
Evan Liechty, Brody Shane and Joel Hawbaker swept the top three positions for the Starfire boys, with Liechty winning in 17 minutes, 31 seconds. Shane finished in 17:36, and Hawbaker posted a time of 17:43.
Cody Sprunger was sixth in 18:30, and Tim Lehman finished ninth at 19:01.
Hannah Moore won the girls race for SAHS in 21:04, and Kristen Muselman was the runner-up in 21:46.
Jenna Smith finished sixth in 22:08 ahead of Alli Amstutz (eighth – 23:26) and Alexis Ford (13th – 25:57).

SA gridders No. 6
INDIANAPOLIS — South Adams finished tied for sixth in Class 1A in the Associated Press high school football poll released Monday.
The Starfires earned 104 poll points to finish in a tie with Rockville (5-1) for the No. 6 spot. They were 26 points behind No. 5 North Central (Sullivan) and 28 ahead of eighth-ranked Sheridan.
Two-time defending state champion Lafayette Catholic remained No. 1 with 238 poll points, and Pioneer is No. 2.
South Adams, which bounced back from its only loss of the year to beat Adams Central 38-20, faces another big test Friday. It will host the Garrett Railroaders, who are undefeated and have won nine of their last 10 dating back to last season.
The Starfires knocked off Garrett 21-17 last season.

Starfire spikers fall
BERNE — The South Adams volleyball team suffered a three-game defeat Tuesday, falling 25-20, 25-15, 25-22 to the visiting Woodlan Warriors.
Alyssa Bluhm had 11 assists, 10 digs and eight kills for the Starfires, who dropped to 6-16. Lily Taing had 10 assists and two aces, Lauren Smith totaled 10 digs and Chelsea Bollenbacher finished with eight kills.
South Adams won the junior varsity match, 25-18, 25-15.
Mackenzie Jennings led the way with seven assists, three aces and two kills.

Cavs top FRMS
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery Middle School eighth grade volleyball team suffered a 25-18, 25-13 loss Tuesday to the Coldwater Cavaliers.
The seventh graders fell 25-16, 25-14.
Morgan Lennartz finished with four kills and two digs for the eighth grade Indians. Kirsten Jutte had four service points and two kills.
Devin Post set the pace for the FRMS seventh grade team with four service points and two kills. Abby Wenning had three service points and two assists.
Both squads are now 5-6.

SA girls dominate
MONROE — South Adams’ middle school girls cross country team finished off a perfect Allen County Athletic Conference season Tuesday with a 15-51 victory over host Adams Central. Garrett did not have enough runners for a team score.
Adams Central was the only team with enough runners for a full squad in the boys competition.
Kara Seffernick led a Starfire sweep of the top five spots in the girls race, winning in 12 minutes, 16 seconds. Hannah Coates was second in 12:48 followed by Olivia Von Gunten (12:51), Lauren Klaehn (12:56) and Julia Grabau (12:59).
Jared Ford placed third for SAMS in the boys race in 12:12. Wyatt Miller was sixth in 12:55 ahead of Briar Goodwin (ninth – 13:16) and Paul Neuenschwander (10th – 13:37).

Jets top SA football
MONROE — The South Adams eighth grade football team lost 33-6 Thursday to the host Adams Central Flying Jets, and the seventh graders suffered an 18-7 defeat.
Kody Coates led the Starfires as he caught two passes for 39 yards from Justin Nussbaum, including a 30-yard TD pass in the second quarter. Matt Hilton, Drew LeFever and Dillon Morning star each finished with six tackles.
Blade Zeitvogel ran eight times for 87 yards for the SAMS seventh graders and scored the lone TD on a 4-yard run in the third quarter. James Groh, Josh Lahr and Corbin Swygart made six tackles apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
