Stars top JCHS in soccer tourney (10/11/06)

JCHS/SAHS girls soccer

MARION - The Patriots gave South Adams a fight. But the Starfires still came out on top.

Jay County's girls soccer team stayed much closer than in their 6-1 regular-season loss to SAHS, but still dropped the rematch Tuesday 4-2 in the first round of the Marion sectional tournament.

A Dana Horn goal had the Patriots within 2-1 with 2:03 remaining in the opening half, but South Adams quickly pushed its advantage back to two. Ashton Morgan's corner kick from the left side led to a Megan Myers header for a score, giving the Starfires a 3-1 halftime advantage. Morgan added a tally, her second goal of the game, in the first 20 minutes of the second half to put her team in complete control.

Jay County had a winning streak of five straight games before falling to Muncie Central and South Adams to finish at 8-5-1. The Starfires advance to play defending champion Marion (12-2-3) - the teams played to a scoreless tie during the regular season - in the semifinal round Thursday at 7 p.m. Marion defeated the Norwell Knights 2-0 in Tuesday's other opening-round game.

After nearly 30 scoreless minutes to open Tuesday's game, Morgan gave South Adams a lead it would never relinquish. She scored on a high chip over Patriot goalie Abby Loy at the 11:13 mark of the opening half. Jana Beitler scored seven minutes later for a 2-0 advantage.

Horn gave Jay County a chance when she pushed through the middle of the Starfire defense and fired a shot past Holly Yoder from 12 yards out. But SAHS scored again before the half, and Morgan added her second goal after the intermission.

The Patriots' final score came on a battle in front of the goal when a loose ball bounced off the leg of a South Adams defender and went into the net. Sara Garringer was credited with the goal.

Jay County finished with 11 shots on goal compared to 17 for South Adams. Loy totaled 13 saves, and Yoder had nine.[[In-content Ad]]
