Stars upend JCHS netters (04/24/07)
JCHS/SAHS girls tennis
A sweep of the first set had the Patriots flying high, but they failed to put South Adams away. The visiting Starfire girls tennis team forced third sets in three matches, and won them all, for a 3-2 victory over Jay County.
Amanda Sprunger gave South Adams the win in the most tightly contested match of the night, holding off Heather Ayers 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. In the No. 2 singles match Kristen Steiner rallied after a first-set loss for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Megan Adams.
Jay County's Jessica Muhlenkamp and Tiffani Bickel took a first-set tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles, but Katie Welch and Kristi Lehman bounced back and took a 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-4 victory to seal the Starfire win.
One of the victories for the Patriots came at No. 1 singles, where Carissa Wilkins improved to 6-1 as she rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Stacey Thorpe. Cindy Muhlenkamp and Megan Knittle narrowly escaped going to a third set as they fought off SAHS's Tara Beitler and Taylor Miller 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2 doubles.
Junior varsity
South Adams won five out of six singles matches and took a 10-4 win over the Patriots.
Jay County's lone singles win came from Hannah McAbee by an 8-0 score at the No. 6 spot. Other wins came from the teams of Brittany Lewis and Betsy Knittle, Mariah Clark and Kayla Martin, and Megan Huntsman and Briann Saxman.
Rachel Sprunger scored the biggest win for the Starfires, shutting out Clark 8-0 at No. 2 singles.[[In-content Ad]]
