State of the Heart is top business (03/01/08)

Business roundup

An Ohio business with local ties recently was named 2007 Business of the Year by the Coldwater (Ohio) Chamber of Commerce.

State of the Heart Home Health and Hospice, which also has offices in Portland and in Greenville, Ohio, was presented to the non-profit agency at the chamber's annual banquet. This is the second such award for State of the Heart.

The Coldwater program is based in downtown Coldwater. Beverly Hughes, marketing director for State of the Heart, said in a press release that the agency was "pleased and proud to accept the award. This award tells us that not only are we providing the very best hospice care possible, but we are also using our financial resources wisely for the agency and for our community."

State of the Heart provides care to families and patients facing life-threatening illness.

Profits plummet

Franklin Electric Co. officials recently reported that net income has dropped by half compared to 2006.

Net sales increased 8 percent in 2007, but net income dropped 50 percent to $29 million from $57 million, the Bluffton-based company told The Journal Gazette this week.

Franklin Electric sells pump systems for water. Higher freight, inventory and warranty costs are among the causes of the income decline.

Event set

The Winchester Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a Home and Business Expo April 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The 18th annual event will take place at the Randolph County 4-H Fairgrounds. Admission is free.

To register for a booth, call the chamber at (765) 584-3731.

Scam warning

Someone has been posing as an Indiana Michigan Power employee and asking to see fuse boxes at homes in the Muncie area.

I&M officials believe the man is pretending to be one of their employees so he can gain access to homes.

Customers should check for clearly marked uniforms and ask to see photo identification before allowing the employees on or near their property. To confirm identification, call (800) 311-4634.

Store open

Aldi Inc. has opened it larger, remodeled store in Winchester.

The 14,000-square foot store opened Monday at U.S. 27 and Greenville Pike. Before the expansion, the store was 10,000-square foot.

The larger store now includes fresh meat and a full line of special purchase items.

The frozen foods section also was expanded and the interior was updated with new color and graphics.
