State ranked teams await Jay Co. this weekend (10/19/04)

Local Roundup

INDIANAPOLIS — It’ll be a weekend of state-ranked opponents for the only two Jay County teams left playing.

The Muncie Central Bearcats, the Patriots’ first-round opponent in football sectional tournament action, finished third in the final Class 4A state football poll released by The Associated Press Monday. The Jay County volleyball team got no break either as it plays the Class 3A No. 8 Delta Eagles in Saturday’s sectional semifinal round.

Central’s football team (9-0) picked up two first-place votes from the AP’s 16-member statewide media panel and had 229 ratings points. It finished behind East Noble (9-0, 283 points) and Mooresville (9-0, 256 points).

No. 4 Delta and No. 6 Columbus East also finished the year undefeated in 4A.

Jay County (3-6) opens sectional play at Central Friday at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the semifinal round where it will meet the winner of another first-round game between unbeaten Delta and winless New Castle.

The Patriots and Bearcats last met in the first round of the 2002 sectional tournament, with Central taking a 20-0 victory.

The Jay County spikers (9-24) open against the No. 8 Eagles at Delta at 12:30 p.m. Delta dropped one spot in the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association poll released Tuesday as they swapped positions with sectional rival Blackford.

Delta defeated the Patriots in the regular-season meeting between the two squads.
