State revamps small business office

Business Roundup

The state of Indiana is realigning its efforts to help small business owners and entrepreneurs by establishing the Office of Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
The office will include the Small Business Development Center, the Procurement Technical Assistance Centers, and a number of specialty programs aimed at Indiana businesses with fewer than 500 employees.
Jacob Schpok has been appointed executive director of the new agency. He is a graduate of Ball State University’s entrepreneurship program and has been with the Small Business Development Center since 2005, serving as director since 2011.

Earnings drop
Allegheny Technologies, parent company of Portland Forge, has announced second quarter net income of $4.4 million or 4 cents per share on sales of $1.14 billion.
That compares with second quarter 2012 net income of $56.4 million or 50 cents a share on sales of $1.36 billion.
“Challenging conditions in many of our end markets continued during the second quarter 2013,” said Rich Harshman, the company’s chairman, president, and chief executive officer, in a prepared statement.
“Lackluster global demand for standard stainless and grain-oriented electrical steel products combined with excels global supply and falling raw material surcharges for stainless resulted in continuing pricing pressure and reduced margins on these products,” Harshman said.
He added, “Market fundamentals remained strong in the commercial aerospace, oil and gas, medical and automotive markets.”

Tyson partnership
Tyson Foods Inc., parent company of Tyson Mexican Original of Portland, has expanded its partnership with the National Urban League in an effort to reduce hunger in America.
The two-year hunger relief project will focus on Tennessee. Last year, the Urban League and Tyson teamed up to address problems with hunger in Mississippi.

More from corn
Two POET biorefineries are installing liquefied carbon dioxide facilities.
The Marion and Fostoria, Ohio, sites will serve the food freezing and beverage carbonation markets.
“One of our priorities at POET is to get the most value from the corn kernel,” a company spokesman said.

This will bring to nine the number of POET plants producing liquefied carbon dioxide in addition to ethanol, animal feed, and corn oil.

Sales, income down
Saint-Gobain, parent company of Verallia North America which operates a glass container plant in Dunkirk, reported sales for the first half of 2013 were down 3.8 percent. Net income for the first half of the year was down 28.3 percent.
Verallia’s sales slipped 2.9 percent despite a 2.1 percent rise in sales prices.
Saint-Gobain is attempting to sell Verallia North America to Ardagh Group, a Luxemburg-based corporation with roots in Ireland, but that deal has been held up by the Federal Trade Commission because of concerns about its impact on competition in the glass container industry.

Scam warning
The Better Business Bureau of Northern Indiana has issued a scam warning involving promises of a Publishers Clearing House jackpot.
Individuals have received phone calls in which they are told they have won a $700 million prize but first must pay taxes on their “winnings.”
“In our experience, there have never been any occurrences of these Publishers Clearing House calls being authentic,” the Better Business Bureau said in a press release.
Suspicious phone calls from scammers can be reported to the Better Business Bureau at (260) 423-4433.
