Stein wins two titles (05/05/05)

Fort track roundup

COLDWATER, Ohio — One Fort Recovery athlete picked up a pair of titles at the Mercer County meet Tuesday and another put herself in position for a third.

Holly Stein dominated both throwing events, scoring wins in both the shot put and discus as she scored 16 of the Indians’ 24 points on the first day of the meet. Vicki Roessner was the top runner in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles, leaving her as the favorite to win the event when the meet resumes today.

The host Cavaliers led the girls competition with 38 points.

The boys team was fifth with nine points, while St. Henry led with 40.

Stein went unchallenged in the shot put as she was one of just three throwers to clear 30 feet and the only one to surpass 31. She won the title by more than three feet with a toss of 34 feet,1/2 inch.

Her victory in the discus also came by just over three feet as she won a 93 feet, four inches.

Roessner, who was also second in the 300 hurdle preliminaries, won the 100 in 18.18 seconds.

Kristi Westgerdes had the other top-three finish for the Indian girls, placing second in the high jump at four feet, eight inches.

The top effort for the Tribe boys came from freshman Matt Vagedes in the pole vault. He bettered his own school record of 11 feet, one inch by clearing the bar at 12 feet even to place second.
