Story times set at JC library (03/31/06)

Taking Note

The Jay County Public Library will hold family story time on Wednesday, April 5 at 5 p.m. There will be stories and crafts for the entire family. Young children are invited to wear their pajamas.

Regular story times will be held on Monday, April 3, at 10 a.m. and Tuesday, April 4, at 1:30 p.m. Story time, which lasts between a half hour and forty-five minutes, includes reading four or five books followed by a craft. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Registration is not necessary, but notify the library if bringing a large group.

Toddler activity time will be held Thursday, April 6 at 9:30 a.m. Older siblings are welcome to attend.

Attends training

Zachary Hudson of the Salamonia Volunteer Fire Department, recently attended training in Jasper.

Training was on semi and bus extrication with instruction on the safety aspects of extrication, dangers, weight distribution, and establishing leverage.

Hudson received a certificate after completing the hands-on applications.

Red Cross event

The Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a “Bucket Shake” fundraising event at two locations in Jay County Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Volunteers and community leaders will be taking donations from drivers at the intersection of Votaw and Meridian streets in Portland and the intersection of Ind. 1 and Meridian Street in Redkey.

eStudent updated

Indiana high school students who have filed a free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be able to more easily track their financial assistance eligibility on-line using eStudent, recently updated by the State Student Commission of Indiana.

Using this tool, students may track their account history, update personal information and change their first choice college. Other changes include allowing Financial Aid Offices to have access to students’ information, rather than using the separate program that was in use prior to these updates.

Germanfest set

The Mercer County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will sponsor the annual Germanfest Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Hopewell Grange at the Mercer County Fairgrounds in Celina, Ohio.

Guest speaker Linda Schwegman will present on the topic Understanding German Migration Routes.

Society members will be on hand to answer questions beginning at 1 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be served.

Annual exhibit set

Huntington University will hold its 16th annual student art exhibit Monday, April 4 through Thursday, April 13, featuring artist and gallery owner, Charlie Cummings, as guest juror.

Cummings, owner of Charlie Cummings Clay Studio and Gallery in Fort Wayne will select best of show, special achievement, and first, second and third place recognitions.

The exhibit, held in the Robert E. Wilson Gallery, will be open to the public weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., before and after Merillat Centre Performances and by appointment.

Music therapy recital

Students and faculty members of Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne music therapy program will present a concert in the Neff Recital Hall Friday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m., featuring vocal and instrumental music.
