Strip mall tops county permit list (02/11/06)
Business roundup
A permit for a ten unit strip mall being built on West Votaw Street across the Wal-Mart SuperCenter was issued in January by the Jay/Portland Building and Planning Department.
Construction costs were estimated at $852,000 for the project.
The permit was applied for by Preferred-Portland, LLC.
Also, Clifton DeRome, 1267 Deerhaven Drive, Portland, applied for and was granted a permit to build an addition with a garage.
Construction costs were estimated at $45,000.
Projects granted permits in January totaled $1,011,800.
Other projects issued permits in January include: Harvest Land Co-op, 980 E. Ind. 67, Bryant, weather shelter, $27,000; Wilma Knoelke, 6175 N. 200 E., Bryant, lean-to, $1,500; Robert Manor, 113 W. 500 N., Bryant, garage, $15,000.

Ruth Goodwin, Raleigh, N.C. has been named the advertising account manager of Dynamic Resource Group, Berne.
Goodwin, who has 19 years of experience in publishing, will represent magazines published by DRG including “Woodworking for Women,” “Quilter’s World” and “Clotilde’s Sewing Savvy”.
Receives honor
The American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division, announced that Bluffton Regional Medical Center is a Five Star Community Investor and Five Star Investor in the fight against cancer through the ASC At Work Program.
In order to be eligible for this award, hospitals must be active in at least five areas of the society’s mission, including offering support groups for cancer patients and survivors and offering community cancer screenings.
To qualify as a Five Star Investor, hospitals must participate in ASC initiatives such as Relay For Life, being a smoke-free worksite, and promoting cancer information and education.
Medicare broadcasts held
Michael Engels of the Portland office of Edward Jones Inc. will host a free satellite broadcast entitled “The Medicare Rx Plan: What It Is and How It Works” at 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14 at the Edward Jones office in the LoBill Foods Plaza.
The presentation will feature outside experts to discuss Medicare Part D, drug coverage options and strategies to help protect one’s retirement income against rising healthcare costs.

The Andersons Inc., based in Maumee, Ohio, reported record-breaking revenue for the fourth quarter of 2005, as well as for the entire year.
The company announced a fourth-quarter net income of $15.3 million for 2005. For the same three-month period in 2004, the Andersons reported a net income of $8.3 million.
Also, the full-year net income for 2005 was $26.1 million, up significantly from $19.1 million in 2004.
In particular, the Agriculture Group’s fourth-quarter and full-year incomes set new records. The operating income for the fourth quarter of 2005 was $16.4 million, up $4.8 million from the previous year.
