Strong shooting sparks dominating Indian win (02/18/04)

FORT RECOVERY — Both teams entered Tuesday’s game with four wins. Still, it was far from an even match-up.

The Fort Recovery boys basketball team destroyed the Houston Wildcats, shooting better than 50 percent in a 71-44 victory.

The Indians (5-12) outscored Houston in every quarter, shooting 58 percent in the first half en route to a 35-20 lead. They finished the game at 53 percent from the field compared to 41 percent for the visiting Wildcats.

John Bihn had an outstanding night for the Tribe with 16 points on 8-of-14 shooting. He also led a 31-15 rebounding advantage with 12 boards for a double-double.

He added five steals and three assists.

Dusty Tobe scored a team-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting as Fort Recovery took advantage of 21 Wildcat turnovers.

Greg Faller, C.J. Tobe, Ryan Staugler and Nick Wehrkamp each scored six points. C.J. Tobe also notched a game-high six assists.

Houston (4-15) also managed to get two players in double figures, but fell behind quickly as it shot 27 percent in the first half. David Cassel came off the bench for 16 points — 4-of-5 from the field and 8-of-10 from the line — and Dusty Reisinger contributed 12.

Tyler Doseck had nine points and four rebounds, and Reisinger grabbed a team-best five caroms.

The Tribe will visit Coldwater Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Fort JV falls late

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity boys basketball team lost a tight junior varsity contest to the Houston Wildcats, 45-42.

The Indians led 23-22 at halftime and held the one-point advantage after three quarters. But, they couldn’t hold in the fourth quarter.

Tyler Thobe paced the Tribe’s effort with 11 points and seven rebounds. Tony Diller had nine points and seven rebounds, and Todd Post also scored nine points.

Aaron Kahlig and Seth Bihn each had three assists, and Post picked up three steals.

Brian Feathers scored 20 points and grabbed four rebounds for the Wildcats. Brandon Hughes had seven points, Brad Ivanowicz had six points and five rebounds, and Matt Poppleman added six points.

Indians in finals

The Fort Recovery seventh grade girls basketball team advanced to the finals of the Midwest Athletic Conference tournament with a 26-14 semifinal victory over the St. Johns Blue Jays Tuesday.

The Tribe will meet the New Bremen Cardinals at Fort Recovery Middle School Saturday at 1 p.m. New Bremen advanced to the championship game with a 33-18 win over Versailles.

Joanna Snyder paced Fort Recovery in the victory over St. Johns with eight points. Kinsey Wenning, Chelsea Klenke and Anne Koesters each added four points.

Tickets on sale

Tickets for Jay County and Fort Recovery basketball games during the next week are now on sale.

The Jay County girls basketball team will play in the Peru regional Saturday, opening the action against the No. 3 Tippecanoe Valley Vikings at 10 a.m. No. 4 Fort Wayne Bishop Luers and NorthWood will play in the second semifinal contest at noon, with the championship game to be played at 8 p.m.

Full tournament passes only are available at a cost of $9 in the JCHS athletics office today and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. They will also be sold Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tickets at the door will be $6 for a single game, and $9 for a full tournament pass.

Fort Recovery will have tickets on sale for its boys basketball games Friday at Coldwater and Saturday vs. Spencerville, and its sectional semifinal game Tuesday against St. Henry at New Bremen.

Tickets for all three games will be sold in the high school office Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. They will also be available in the middle school office Friday from 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Sectional ticket sales will continued in the high school office Monday from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday from 7:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Advance tickets for the boys games are $3 for students and $5 for adults. Advance tickets for the girls sectional game are $4 for students and $5 for adults.
