Students compete for scholarships (01/23/06)

Kerri Evans and Matt Snyder, both seniors at Jay County High School, recently competed in The University of Findlay's Scholarship Competition Day in Findlay, Ohio. They were among only 118 students from around the country to compete for merit scholarships worth up to $5,000. Students were chosen to compete based on grade point average, ACT and SAT scores.
While at Findlay, Evans and Snyder had to complete a written essay and be interviewed by University representatives.
Kerri is involved in yearbook staff, newspaper staff and National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Mia and Mark Evans, Portland.
Matt is a member of Spanish Club and the son of Janna and Steve Snyder, Portland.
Scholarship winners will be announced at a later date.
Director needed
Jay County Civic Theatre is searching for a director for its spring musical "The Boy Friend" to be performed April 18 through 20 and 22nd. Auditions dates are Feb. 19 and 20.
Anyone interested should send a letter of application to Jay County Civic Theatre, P.O. Box 121, Portland, IN 47371, before Jan. 31. For more information, call Bev Wolford at (260) 725-5362.
Scholarships available
Indiana Extension Homemakers Association is offering eight $500 scholarships to Indiana homemakers who are at least 25 years old.
Applications are available at the Jay County Cooperative Extension Office, 504 W. Arch St., Portland. For more information, call (260) 726-4707.
Cooking program
The Jay County Purdue Cooperative Extension Service is sponsoring the program "Cooking with a Light Touch" on Thursday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m. The program will be held at the Community Resource Center, 118 S. Meridian St. in Portland.
Annette Pairsh, Delaware County Extension Educator, will discuss changes you can make in your favorite recipes to make them healthier. Also learn ways to lower your risk for disease or manage a disease you already have.
To make reservations, call the Extension Office at (260) 726-4707 by Feb. 7. Cost is $1.

Julie Sours has been named to the dean's list at Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences for the fall semester of 2006. She is the daughter of Bob and Laura Sours, Portland.

Jessica Marie Heitkamp and Emily Ann Lyons, both of Portland, have made the dean's list at Depauw University for the fall semester of 2006. She is a sophomore at Depauw.
