Regional Bee
Jay County elementary schools recently held spelling bees and the winners will be going on to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee.
The winner from Redkey Elementary was Morgan Brown, a fifth grade student. She is the daughter of Michael and Bonnie Brown, Portland. The alternate is fourth grader Lance Ferguson. He is the son of Tom and Jane Ferguson, Redkey.
The winner from Westlawn Elementary was Mitch Bennett. He is in the fifth grade and is the son of Tammy and Tab Bennett, Dunkirk. The alternate was Emily Back, a fifth grader. Her parents are Bill and Michelle Back, Dunkirk.
The winner from Judge Haynes Elementary was McKayla Norris. She is a fourth grader and the daughter of Jennifer Cox, Portland. The alternate is Levi Hummel, the fourth grade son of Gene and Jennifer Hummel, Portland.
The winner from Bloomfield Elementary is Michelle Wellman, a fifth grade student and the daughter of Greg and Kathy Wellman, Bryant. The alternate is fifth grader Jessica Kerrigan. She is the daughter of Gary and Rita Kerrigan, Portland.
Fort winner
David Tobe, an eight grader from Fort Recovery Middle School, was the second runner-up at the Mercer County Spelling Bee and will represent Mercer County Schools at the Regional Spelling Bee in March. He is the son of Lester and Therese Tobe.
Dean's list
Area students were named to the dean's list at the University of Northwestern Ohio for the January session.
